2001 4runner tranny questions possible swap questions. Did search

I have a 2001 4runner with a bad auto transmission in it. I have a good auto transmission from a 99 Tacoma. Can this be made to work if so how? I know the runner is drive by wire and more electrical. If not what is required to 5 speed swap it? I also have a junk 5speed Tacoma for parts. All of them are 3.4 v6.. being in Ct can't trigger a check engine light...

You'll need an '03/'04 Tacoma V6 4WD M/T ECU to run your '01 4R engine with a manual trans.
As far as I've heard/read, the '99 trans can't be used in an '01/'02. It's because of the line pressure being cable actuated off the throttle body on the '99, but all electronic on the '01.

So on a 5 speed swap I'd be using the t case out of the Tacoma what about drive shafts cvs?

You can use whatever case you want, and they do vary in length. You'll have to do some wiring to use the Tacoma J-Shift though.
Drive shaft lengths will be different, and I'm not sure what you mean by "drive shafts cvs".

I'm aware none of it will be easy but I'm aiming for simplest swap possible. Ideally I'd keep the t case that's in my 01 runner mate it to the 99 Tacoma 5 speed and run it via an 03-04 Tacoma 5 spd v6 4x4 Ecu...
So in short
01 4runner currently auto
Swap in 5 spd from 99 taco mate that transmission to the t case that's in the runner
Swap in ecu from 03-04 Tacoma
Doing this swap I'd keep current cv axles I wouldn't think that would change?
And I would also need different drive shafts?
Is that potentially easiest way to accomplish this swap?

Front CVs only attach to the diff which will remain. So no change there.

If you do a manual trans with the multi-mode transfer case, you may have issues with shifter locations and the front and rear driveshafts will probably change length from what you have currently.

The electrical side sounds like it will mostly work though... You'll want to check pinouts, etc. to make 100% sure. There are a probably a few things you will have to wire (reverse light switch on the MT vs. the shift indicator switch on the auto, etc.)
