Unreal! Will any bulb that's out do that? Also, i find it funny these trucks don't tell you when a bulb is out on the dash like many older cars than this do...

The Controller Area Network, or CANbus, equipped vehicle does exactly that.

BMW was the first company to release a production car in 1986 featuring CANbus and by 2008 all cars sold in the US required it.

I don't know of any 3rd gen 4runners with CANbus

I'm glad you got it fixed. I had a similar issue when I installed my LED tail lights not too long ago, soon as I installed them my ABS light came on. I did some research and found out LED's draw much less power so the ECU thinks you have a bulb out. So then I ordered some load resistors which take care of this problem but I should have checked my 3rd brake light 1st because, sure enough, it was out!

My theory is my 3rd brake light was out for a long time but it never triggered anything because the 2 other brake light bulbs were still drawing sufficient power. Soon as I changed them to LED's it triggered the ABS light on dash. Just like you, I replaced my 3rd brake light bulb and the ABS light went away.

Ah, so if the 3rd brake bulb wasn't burned out, you would have never gotten the abs light when putting in the led tails....

glad to see Jason b got it resolved! so I'm having some what of the same issues, previous owner had the typical sound system with an amp and sub in the back. I spend days pulling wires that were ran fixing bad connections ect. eliminated a few LEDS behind the radio area and still having the problem when lights are on if I'm set to 55mph on cruise and hit the high beams it will unlock the convertor same thing if I'm in OD and hit the hazards button. I have no leds in the rear.

You can probably get it to do the same thing by lightly stepping on the brakes when at cruising speed.

So, now to figure out if it is damaged wiring or those aftermarket LEDs in various places...

Im having this same exact issue, this is exactly where I'm at in the process figuring this out, my 3rd brake light works fine though. I'm kind of stuck on this I've been trying so many things over the past few weeks I'm starting to forget what I have and have not done lol going to try the stepping on the brake @ 55mph any advice would be much appreciated

Time to start from the beginning and keep notes. Its kinda annoying to write everything down, but you will get a clear picture pretty fast of what is going on - and it will allow you to post more detailed questions here. Good luck!

thanks for the feedback! I understand what your saying. so I basically did start from the beginning earlier today tearing all of the interior out going over grounds cleaning the metal where they fasten to the body. trying to stumble across something. starting to lean towards the cluster being the problem after all will pull in the am and inspect. so driving home tonight I just found that with the ect power turned off it does not act up...only with it turned on. there is still some lights on the cluster that flash when using blinker though
