Coolant smell from heat only

Hey guys!

Long time lurker and member over at ttora . I drive a 1997 v6 5spd.. 250k runs amazing. I changed the entire coolant system except heater core In 2015 due to age/leaks. I currently have no leaks, no drips, not getting hot. However..when I turn my heat on it smells like musty coolant. I've flushed the heater box / vents with cleaner through the AC drain tube , inspected with a boroscope, taken blower out etc. cannot track this down! It's been getting a tad worse over past 1.5 years so I come to you begging for some insight and maybe some experience. I was a master Hyundai mechanic for 8 years before becoming a full time firefighter/emt so I'm pretty schooled and have the tools. Anybody experience this? It's almost nauseating and with a toddler in the back and another on the way I want it fixed . Thanks for anything you can provide.

Zach

Welcome.
Gotta ask. Does the coolant level go down?

level has never gone low...Im thinking heater core as well. maybe just a pinhole leak that evaporates before it makes a drip. anybody have any hacks to doing this?

Pull the bad one out and put a new one in.

Wife's car never dripped anything. Her's wasn't actually the heater core though, some weird clip that attaches the heater core had broke.

I think there are some pretty good write ups on here for the heater core, it's no easy feat from what I understand.
