New Product: Matterhorn MKII

We are excited to finally announce the release of the all new Matterhorn MKII. An all new design for the rack that started it all. During the design process we sat down and identified a few areas that really needed some attention. While they are all mostly cosmetic, we felt it was best to bring the Matterhorn in line with our other products. Since we first released the original Matterhorn we have worked hard to increase the build quality of our racks and we felt that the Matterhorn had somewhat been forgotten. So, whats new?

Updated Side Plate Profile:
When designing the first rack our number one priority was having something thin and sleek. Our tools at the time consisted of cardboard and a Sharpie, which made getting a side plate that was accurate down to 1/32" a little challenging. The new profile matches the curve of the vehicle perfectly and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. The side plate remains just far enough off of the roof to account for the movement in the roof of the 3rd gen 4runner. This is a Toyota design that many manufacturers have fought from day one.

Updated Front Fairing
The front wind fairing has also been reshaped to work with the new side plates. The fairing now sits a lot closer to the roof and works even better with our new light bar brackets. While the old fairing still works great, this one leaves just a little more room for a slightly larger bar.

38" ExtremeLED X6S White/Amber Combo Light Bar

40" ExtremeLED Stealth Series Single Row Light Bar

38" ExtremeLED "BIG BOY" X6 10W Amber/White Light Bar

New Front Leveling Feet
One element of the rack we have always battled was the front leveling feet. For the last couple of years we have made due with components manufactured by other companies. Battling adhesives, proper surface area, and even rubber densities. We have watched competitors come up with their own take on the front mounts, from 3M adhesive pads stuck to the roof to rivnuts. Nothing really worked and we were ready to finally solve the problem with the proper resources. First we designed an all new adjustable leveling mount and put it to work on our line of topper racks with great results. Then we set to making our own rubber in house that is the perfect density for the roof of your vehicle. The final result is a mount that we can all be stoked about.

This new mount can be used with the original Matterhorn as well and is available as a component on our website.

Additional Crossbars
The new Matterhorn now ships with an additional two crossbars, bringing the total to nine. This provides you with even more space to mount your gear or even leave two of them attached to your RTT all the time. Not to mention they make for a great place to bolt up a couple of Sherpa Smileys.

We also have an "upgrade" option available on our website for anyone who is interested in sprucing up their old rack. That can be found here.

Little late on getting this posted here, but wanted to share it with you all.

1000 Hard Miles on our new Matterhorn MkII
We just returned from a 1000 mile journey from Telluride to Moab via the Rim Rocker, then returning home through mostly trails from Grand Mesa to the front range of Colorado.

We are happy to report that we only broke other things on our truck through the 400 plus miles of dirt.

Things we broke driving too fast on very bumpy roads to test our racks.
-2x Panhard bolts
-Homemade camper seals
-Rotopax Mount
-Ham Radio Antenna
-3 Wooden Homemade Drawer systems
-Lost wheel weights
-Upper Balljoint Play
-One burned hand
-100's of bug bites
-1 Battery
-A rear diff seal

Roofracks 1 - Everything else 0

Heres some images to show for our journey and for your enjoyment.

Alex, thanks for sharing. What's the weight of the RTT? Great to hear the rack held-up well on such a long trek...

Panhard bolts? They sheared, bent, or what?

Ugh I can’t wait to order one but I have to! How about a “tax refund sale” around tax time next year!

I ordered the new Matterhorn on Sunday, can't wait to get it.

@Flemster

What are the hardware sizes used in assembly? I'm trying to find black stainless versions.

Also what's the correct eye bolt thread length to screw into the tnutz for tie downs?

My RTT comes in around 100lbs with my stuff in it. The Panhard bolts both backed off with Loctite and being tourqed to spec on two separate vehicles. We keep spare bolts with us now haha.

We usually run a sale around that time so keep an eye out!

Thats awesome! Excited to get it out to you. The hardware needed that is visible on the outside are...
- 1/4-20x1/2 x6
- 1/4-20x7/8 x28
- 1/4 flat washer x34

We are hoping to get some black hardware in for testing soon. We have always had rusting issues on the few black hardware we have tried so we are working on getting some high-quality stainless.

You should get an eyebolt with a through-hole and run a bolt according to that thickness. We have never had good luck with eyebolts hence why we designed the Sherpa Smileys. Much stronger, more versatile, and they look a little better in our minds!

I'm hearing red Loctite on some fasteners, like those.

As a habit, I mark many with fingernail polish and a periodic one minute inspection would tell if any are backing-off...

Hey Sherpa team,

Whenever I wash my truck I notice that the top of the cross bars get filled with water. They seem to sloooowwly drain out of the interface between the cross bar and the sides as seen here:

Can you guys come up with a clever way to help the cross bar slots drain out?

Got this MKI on the 19th of July. Ordered the Front Runner quick tent disconnect mount kit before I ordered the rack and received the Ironman quick release awning kit today. Now I can take off my tent and awning off when not in use. Bad ass product. I did upgrade all nut and bolts to Grade 5 and also installed Grade 5 locking washers on every bolt just because it will eases my brain. Well done Sherpa on a great product.

Thanks. I did pick up some smilies but they are expensive and when strapping down across the width of the rack, the orientation is wrong for the straps (smilies mounted on the side of the crossbar).

Appreciate that! Sounds pretty awesome with the quick disconnects!
Our hardware is stainless so we dont see rust issues. We have never had hardware failures on our racks and much prefer selling hardware that can withstand weathering. The tensile strength is very comparable to grade 5 zinc hardware.

The smileys can be mounted just about anywhere on our rack, bolted at the ends of the bars on the side plate or bolted anywhere on any of the crossbars with the included T-nuts. I'd be interested to see a picture of what you mean so that if it is something that is faulty on our end we can make a solution for the orientation you are trying to achieve!

Sadly this is just a side effect to having slotted rails as crossbars, my roof tracks from the factory do the same thing. Sometimes its best to just let them drain on a hill before drying off the vehicle. I can't say my rack has a pooling effect and they seem to drain immediately upon getting very wet. Usually, totally dry within 10-20 minutes after washing my truck. (Temperature-dependent of course)

Let gravity do the work for you. Just park at a slanted surface so it drains off to one side and also drains quicker. Dry the uphill side of the truck and by the time you get to the downhill side it should be all drained out to where you can dry it off with little to no drain from the bars.

For instance - If you have a slanted driveway, you can park sideways on it.
