Cummins 2.8L in a 3rd gen?

Is anyone else considering doing this besides myself? I work for Cummins and would love to have one, but until now they haven't offered an engine i was interested in for a Toyota. I'm about to buy a 2002 Sport Edition 4runner with a bad tranny but it got me thinking if i should just pull the engine and start mapping out a plan to make the diesel swap happen. It would be great to actually drive something i want to drive to work everyday instead of what i have to drive (a high mpg car). I guess i'll wait and see what kind of transmission adaptors will be available but i'm guessing the initial offerings will be for Jeep conversions. Price for the engine is around $7000 from what I've been hearing. Sounds like a lot but i could have diesel powered 3rd gen for around $10K if i did the work myself. Is this the wrong vehicle to be considering this or would this be a better idea for a Land Cruiser? Thanks...great forum by the way!

what I think would suck is dealing with a bell housing adapter for our transmissions

Wow. I had no idea. That looks like a solid option. I really like the universal wiring harness. Seems very straight forward and well thought out. Curious about trans adaptor offerings as well.

Unless you go manual trans your going to need to operate the shift solenoids.

I work on Cummins too. I was thinking the same, bell housing not a big issue if you guys are worry. AA will have anything you need to make it fit! Just the investment is it worth it?or the 3.4 good enough.Plus I like to keep everything Toyota

Maybe I'm biased because I have a 1KZT-E in my landcruiser, but you can now start picking up these engines from JDM importers for under $3000 easily including box, transfercase, ecu ect, and they will bolt right in and wire up fairly easy as they were a designated engine around the world for these trucks.

These engines are also far more refined as far as drivability, noise and vibration goes compared to those cummins motors. It also gives you plenty of spare cash to play around with mods to the engine if wanted.

Just my 2 cents

In purely practical terms, I can't think of a single good reason to spend 10k on putting a diesel in a 4runner. You'll never recoup that in fuel savings, and the new cummins' reliability hasn't been proven where the 5vze has.

Cool project for sure, but you could have a good running reliable 3rd gen for much less.

But if we all only ever thought in practical terms, the world would be a boring place.

Do It! You could call it the CumRunner

The R2.8 is a far cry from the 4bt that you’re probably thinking of. The reviews praise the motor for being very quiet and refined.

Not to mention that gray market import motors aren’t legal for swap in many areas.
