Center diff lock

How do you lock the center diff in a 4runner that doesn't have the RR button?
I need to remove my front drive shaft to see if that is where a noose is coming from but don't wanna screw anything up.

What MY ya' got? Not all years have the RR available or center diff.

The "RR" dash button (left side of steering wheel) is only for 4wds with the Rear locker.

The center locker also has a dash button but it's simply has an "X" on it (same place).

If you have it hold it down for a second or two while putzing along.

The button with the X on it is for the multi-mode 4wd which was only available on 01-02 models. When you engage 4x4 on a previous model, then the center diff will be locked, if I got that right. On the 01+ models, you press the 4x4 button on the transfer case shiftier and then you are in AWD. To engage the 4x4 (center diff locked), you'd press the "X" button by the steering wheel. I don't know how it works on the older models though. Y'all have the J shifter.

With the J shifter transfer case you can remove the front driveshaft any time you like.

To answer the question-
In a '99/'00, you simply shift into H4L or L4L.

In a '01/'02, you press the 4WD button on the tcase shifter, then press the center diff lock button to the left of the steering wheel.
If it's not a '99/'00 Limited, or an '01/'02 (of any model), your "center diff" is always locked.

Mine is a J shifter. All I have to do is pull front drive shaft put in 4wd high and drive to see if the noise is there or not?

Just pull the front shaft. No need to put in 4wd as your just going to be in 2wd anyway with no front shaft. Only time you would need to put in 4wd is if you pulled the rear shaft out, or broke it or something. Unless I'm missing something here it should be pretty straight forward.

The real answer here is that you have no center diff (non-limited '96-'00, limited '96-'98). You have a transfer case. Front and rear driveshafts are always locked when you put the shifter into 4H...

The front driveshaft is not turning when you are in 2WD. So if you were hoping to eliminate a noise by removing the front driveshaft and then driving it around, it won't make a difference.

There's a vacuum operated front diff dis-engager (ADD) that allows the front diff to freewheel (sort of) and the front driveshaft is not in motion.

Well back to the drawing board then. Maybe someone could help if o explain the noise better. It sounds like a wheel bearing but only makes the noise while I'm pressing the gas pedal down and only around certain rpm's (I manually shifted to make sure it wasn't with certain speed and gears) it isn't constant but more like a "whom whom whom whom" any idea what to check next?

Try the reverse. Put it in 4WD and remove the rear driveshaft. You will essentially have a FWD truck at that point.
