Should I change original LBJ's at 380K miles?

Should I or shouln't I ?

I finally did it 8-8-17. 96 Ltd 380k miles.
No particular reason other than my son will be driving it to school.
Have been doing on vehicle FSM check with dial indicator for 70k miles. well within spec.
Performed FSM off vehicle BJ spec test for torque without torque guage. by feel it would'nt have passed. The ball did rotate smoothly in cup full rotation. +- .001" on ball movement in cup in/out.
300k of those miles with 285/75-16 10 ply, steel wheels. forgot exact weight, their heavy.
70k worth of trails rated 1-5.
It that crazy or what?
Think I got my money's worth don't you.

My first thread, just ramblin! sittin round the fire! with beers!

And cell service. That can be more dangerous then a LBJ failure. lol

Enjoy the beer and the fire man you made the right call replacing them. It's the preventive part of preventive maintenance that ends up saving you money in the long run.

380K, real bad design these ball joints!

The only reason I changed mine @ (143k 15 years old) in 2015 is because I was so paranoid driving on them from this site. They felt totally fine.

The LBJ carnage stories been nagging the back of my mind for a while, why I started experiment.
The design is the same 96-02. Toyota was buying tight spec'd LBJ's till 2000, figured out they were making them too good. They fixed that, the 01 I bought Feb 198k mi. LBJ's are looser than the 96's near 200k less miles. New ones for 01 on shelf, no experimenting with newer LBJ's.
Another reason I did this, you hear failure stories. Why haven't mine failed?
Do I drive differently? I haven't babied 96, been put up wet a time or two, bounced around.

Maybe you live in some paradise where pothole, chipseal, and missing pieces of road are new to you vernacular.

In Michigan, people have had to get their teeth fixed from running over potholes. Maybe it different down south??

Was driving home from work this week and randomly saw a 1st gen Tacoma on the side of the on-ramp leading up to the highway. Sure enough, the LBJ had failed. So YES these should be replaced!!

I think these failures happen on regular basis around the world, but there is no central record keeping of how prevalent the problem is so people just assume they are one-off events.

I've been in Preventive/Predictive Maint for a number of years, the LBJ's turned into a case study.
