The door looks nice. And, welcome to my world. I have not been able to put mine in the small 1950's garage since I added 285s, and certainly not since adding my 861 coils. Hahahah. It sure makes driveway maintenance more annoying if the weather is not cooperating. Last winter, I had to change my spark plugs and wires on the only sunny day of the week that happened to be 36 degrees out with super strong gusts of wind to remind me how cold it was.

My heart sank when I saw you got T boned, but then I read the rest and saw you came out fine. I almost got T boned by a jeep who ran a light the other night. I was going about 45 so it wouldn't have been good. Time to get a dashcam if you don't have one, just incase next time it doesn't end so well or the other party isn't very cooperative...
The garage door looks good too! Nice color choice.

About the third thought I had after the accident was "Man, I should have a dash cam." I'm already looking into getting one.
Yeah, the door color was a toss up. Everyone and there brother has a white door. The house already has green fascia that needs to be re-painted soon. I knew the door color wouldn't match the fascia perfectly so I got the door fist figuring I could match the new fascia paint to it. Plus it let me put off sandblasting and painting that damn fascia for a few more weeks.
On a truck note, my starters acting up. Guess I'm not done wrenching on her after all. The contacts and plunger have been in the garage for about 9 months now. Guess it's finally time to install them. lol

Had some time after climbing today to pull the starter from my rig. Swapped out the contacts and plunger. It starts up no problems now. All in all it's not as bad as a lot of people have made it out to be. Just a little under 2 hours and that was with eating dinner in the middle of it. Glad it's out of the way for the next 247,000 miles though.
I actually got to do all this in my garage. The new door easily allows my rig back in the garage. I've got about 3" of clearance from the top of my rack to the bottom of the garage door. It is so sweet to be able to work inside again. Although, I'm done working in it for a while. lol

X2 on the Dashcam.... Just yesterday I almost hit a punk ass kid riding a bike. I was sitting at a red light, it turned green and started to cross the intersection. I was watching this kid riding his bike on the sidewalk coming from the right and he couldn't care less I had the right of way. He just rode his bike right in front of me. I slammed on my brakes and came to a stop about 5 feet from him and he rode right in of me not giving a rats ass.... He didn't even look at me.
First thought I had, was I wish I could've tapped him hard enough to bounce his ass off the street.
Second thought I had, was I really need to get a dashcam...

OK. Debate time. This can be a long one since I won't be ordering until spring but:
4.88 or 5.29?
My rigs currently sitting on 33.3's. In the future there is a very good chance I'll tub the wells and go to 35's. It's a daily driver for my wife who has a very short 2 mile commute. It also does some highway on trips once a month or so.
On weekends it's a trail rig. I'll be getting F/R lockers from ECGS in the spring and need to decide what gearing to go with.
Currently on the highway at 75MPH OD is frikking useless so I'm OD off sitting at 3200 RPMs. I've done the calcs and know where both gear sets will put me with both size tires. So this is simply looking for people who are running either set with either size and if they are happy.
I'm leaning towards 4.88 but if I go 35's I really don't want to do the gears again. Let's here it.

I'm sure 4.88 would be great with 33's or 34's but if you plan to ever go 35's, the 5.29 gears are going to be worth the higher RPM. Especially in the higher elevations, mountains, and rock crawling. I plan to go to 5.29's when I do front locker and gears. If you are already running around with OD off, then you are already used to the higher RPM's. My vote is 5.29's but there are also reasons not to go that route. 5.29's are weaker. That's all I can think of for reasons not to go 5.29 with 35's.

More teeth on the ring. Theory goes that because each tooth has a smaller diameter it will be weaker.
The other side will say numerically higher gears can be stronger. If you have more teeth engaging the pinion at the same time theoretically that should be stronger.
I have never actually seen anyone put any of this to a scientific test. Fact is I'll break a CV or axle before I snap high quality gear sets.
That's both sides of the never ending debate in a nutshell.

If I recall from reading on the Zukguy site, he says properly setup 5.29s are no different than any other.
I plan on sending my diffs to him when the time comes, seems to be a pretty knowledgeable guy on Toyota gears.

It has to do with the size of the gears. Especially the pinion gear. The less teeth, the less mesh you have between the pinion & ring gears. Notice below that the 5.29 ratio has a smaller pinion and ring gear than the other gear ratios. In theory 4.30 gear would be the strongest, but even I have destroyed a rear end with that ratio. Drive smart and any ratio will be fine. I blew my rear end from doing things I should not have been doing in the first place.
4.10 = 41/10
4.30 = 43/10
4.56 = 41/9
4.88 = 39/8
5.29 = 37/7
5.71 = 40/7

The weakest gears are improperly installed ones.
Too much backlash, wrong carrier bearing preload or incorrect patterning (shimming of pinion, etc) will create less surface contact and allow gears to slip with minimal engagement and slop.
I plan on measuring and tuning carrier bearing preload when I have my diff out this weekend to minimize on slop due to mileage and/or bearing/race wear - if any.

Took five minutes this morning to adjust my throttle cables. They where pretty loose with a lot more slop then they should have. It made a huge difference in off the line power as well as top end. Cruise control is now actually trying to drop into OD at 75 MPH.
While it won't stop me from re-gearing at least I have a little more power back.

Silver Canyon to Cottonwood Creek North(5S116)
After a month of honey-do listing it was finally time to get out and explore some more of my backyard. The best part of this trip is that my wife suggested it. She chose the location and navigated the whole way. It was super fun and we got to check out an area not that often visited.
Cottonwood Creek is on Calis wild and scenic rivers list. It's more scenic then wild. No one will bother kayaking it ever. Though small, it's a pretty cool source of year round water in the Whites. We started the trip up Silver Canyon and ended up just coming back down it. Total was 50 miles and 6 hours on dirt.
There was nothing technical on the trip except for the usual sand and rock. The Forest Service has decided to cut in these really annoying diversion culverts recently though. Think of them not as any attempt to divert water but as giant speed bumps. Annoying.
Here's some photo's. The new attempt is with imgur. If you guys can't see these I'm gonna be pissed. lol
Silver Canyon from Route 6
Tire deflation made easy
Difficult? Yeah, not really.
Start of Silver
End of Silver and top of the Whites
Turn off to Cottonwood or the moon?
A photo of my wife taking a photo.
That valley in the background is the destination
Hi-lift, traction boards nor shovel was used for this trip
Lots of climbing potential
2000' of drop in 1/2 mile. Yeah, it's steep.
In the valley.
Roads end. The river is 50' directly below me.
