Help - 4runner won't turn off even with key removed
Help! My son's 3rd Gen 4runner (97) will not shut off even when the key is removed. It just continues to run.
Any ideas what it might be? How to fix it? Thank you!

Remove hoses to the evap box to stall it out.. Once motor is not running, figure out why it's not killing. My thought is the ignition is failing to send kill signal. Hope you get her fixed.

Definitely ignition related.

Yeah, there is not too much else it could be. When the key switch cuts power, it cuts power to the injectors, and also the ECU via the EFI relay, which then cuts the fuel pump via the Circuit Opening Relay. Any of these actions would kill the engine. The only other conceivable possibility is a short of 12V+ power to the black-red wire coming off the key switch. See attached EWD (for the '97 V6, but the 4-cyl is similar):

Is there a remote starter installed?
They have the ability to keep the motor running when key is removed.

The news reports that I've seen make a short seem possible with the OP's location of "S Florida"

No remote starter installed.
PS. We live in Miami and thankfully Hurricane Irma didn't blow us away. We're lucky we still have power at the house and the problem started the day before the hurricane.

If it was my old CJ7 I'd say the aux contacts on the starter solenoid. But the Toy doesn't have such a thing.

Ah, but what if a Mickynick got his hands on the wiring?
If IG2 has power with the key off, it is a bad switch, but just to be sure make sure the wire still isn't hot with the switch disconnected. Because if is, then you need to find what could be back feeding that circuit. It isn't hard to do, seen it done, speaking for a friend! Haha

Totally agree. I tend to look at the factory-wired set up. But no system is proof against a sufficiently determined idiot.
Of course, you want to test that black-red wire for a downstream 12V+ after you disconnect the key switch. That's why I mentioned the possibility.

Autoparts store thinks it the Ignition Lock Cylinder that needs to be replaced. Think they could be right?

Yes, but they could be wrong. If you rule out a backfeed, it's one of TWO parts:
84450-41010 SWITCH ASSY, IGNITION OR STARTER
69057-35070 CYLINDER & KEY SET, IGNITION SWITCH LOCK
Only way to be sure is take it apart.

Thank you for this.
I'm involved with a Can bus problem on my car and a bit overwhelmed to have another electrical problem with my truck. I have a 3rd gen JDM Surf and it continued running twice when I turned the key off. It was weird though, not like any dieseling I've ever heard.
It sounded like it was running at starter speed, and firing. But wouldn't speed up, nor slow down and stall.
I've got an intermittent failure with the dimmer switch for the instrument panel, so I think you've put me on the right path for solving this problem.
