Replace ITRs or replace steering rack.

Hey guys,

So I want some opinions on this. My steering rack bushings need to be replaced and I also need to replace my outer tie rod ends as well as the inners.

My question is, at this point should I bother replacing the inners and just buy a new steering rack? I understand there's quite a price difference but I'm thinking in the long run it might be better to replace the entire thing. I've got 212k miles on my 4runner right now.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I went with a new "detroit axle" steering rack complete with all the bushings already installed. I think it was 200$ plus shipping on ebay.

How has it worked out for you? I was planning to get an OEM one, but if there's decent alternatives out there for half the cost, then why not.

I replaced mine with OEM shortly after the amount of miles you're at. Did OEM rack, ITRs and OTRs. I went OEM because my current one made it to 200k+ miles, problem free. The OEM rack also comes with new ITRs, unsure if after market racks do as well.

I know that auto parts stores will sell the lifetime warranty ones but is it really worth it if you go through multiples, and have to do the job multiple times, in the lifetime of one OEM rack?

If the rack isn't leaking leave it alone and do just the bushings and tie rods needed. If you want the rack to last longer, flush fluid once every 3 years or so. It's probably original fluid in there now....that's what I do with mine (it had a short whine when really cold) and it resolved all issues since 5 years ago.

Been 2 months and I see no difference from an OEM rack

Thanks guys.

Since my steering rack isn't leaking I think I will just replace the bushings and ITR's then go from there. When I bought the truck it had power steering fluid in it but I since replaced it with ATF.

Look for Genuine Toyota tie rods at Amayama to save a bunch of $$.

I replaced my ps rack on the 00 Tacoma. Came with new clamp bushing which had failed as well l. whole unit was leaking bad. Old bolt bushings I drove out of old and put in new rack. Drove like a dream after alignment. Came fully assembled. Inner and outer ties rods. ASAP in Houston Rosenberg Texas area
