3rd gen 4runner PCV Valve Replacement

Hey all,

Just finished this install and wanted to share some pics. It's a really easy procedure, although the brittle grommet can be a PITA. I had to go fishing for parts of it that fell in while I was trying to remove. It was super brittle!

Note, I also noticed a ton of metal shavings in the area below which was somewhat unsettling. You can see what I'm talking about in pic #5...

How did it actually come out? I can spin mine easily but can’t actually pull the thing out. Did u pull it from the grommet or just pull till it came out? Mine just won’t budge and I know it needs to be changed sooner or later

Mine was like that. Don't try to grab the top with pliers or something or attempt to pry the upper lip as you will probably break it. I pulled mine after 15 years by working on a still warm (not hot) engine, and using a seal pick with a 90° tip that let me pull up on the bottom edge. I worked it around pulling a little bit harder each time as I worked around the bottom edge. When it finally popped, it went 10 feet in the air but stayed in one piece. I did spray some PB blaster around the edge before I started.

I used a pick like the second from the top:

I didn't use the point, I put the elbow against the bottom inside edge.

A rocking motion will help too. A panel puller like this might help/work too:

Metal shavings? Dun dun duuunnn...

Might want to change your oil soon in case some of them dropped onto the heads & camshafts.

Resurrecting an old thread, but I like following up on the specific threads that help me the most.
Thanks for the post, this job is very easy.

12204-62010 - PCV Valve
90480-18001 - PCV Grommet
12261-62041 PCV Hose

My PCV hose was cracked so I replaced it as well.

Things I wish I would have known before starting:
if you search Ebay using the hose number, you will find kits that include all 3 parts for less $$$. I bought all 3 parts separately and wasted $10 bucks.
Also, I am about to replace my vacuum line following THIS THREAD... if you plan on doing that, then skip ordering the hose all together.

Don't be afraid of doing this job, I had several pieces of the old grommet get pushed down into the housing, but I was able to fish them out pretty easily with picks and pliers.... No big deal.

- I sprayed the old valve/grommet with WD-40 two days before removing it. (I also removed while the engine was warm)
- The valve popped right out. I fished out the crumbling grommet right behind it.
- Push the new grommet in first, use a tiny bit of oil if needed
- Pop the new valve into place
- connect the hose
- DONE

Thanks to all who participate on this forum! Replaced the PCV valve on my ’98. The old valve took some effort, a lot of rocking back and forth and wiggling. Pliers did the trick. Was nervous about the grommet but took it slow and worked it until it came really loose. It did break in two, but big enough to grab once I pried most of it out. Panel remover tool worked great for this.

I did warm it up by driving around the block a couple of times and used a lot of WD-40 to make removal a bit slicker. Installing the new parts was much easier, used WD-40 there also.

Parts list for '98 4 cylinder, ordered from Toyota Parts Deal, no issues there.

12204-75010 - PCV Valve
90480-18001 - Grommet
12261-75030 - Ventilation Hose
90467-14001 - Ventilation Hose Clips x2

Old valve and new valve plus old grommet in two pieces:

New PCV valve installed:

Is there a consensus on how often to replace the PCV valve? It’s not listed in the OEM maintenance schedule and the schedule goes up to 120k miles. I replaced mine at 150k, but I’m just wondering if it needs some more often.

As long as it rattles it’s good just remove and spray it out with brake cleaner every once and a while.

agree with above...ive cleaned them often on many cars, esp if a car has ring or valve issues with increased blow by..they are not something tricky or complicated.
but would not hurt to replace every spark plug change or every timing belt, not like they are tons of money. I replaced mine at 145k and at 190k. 145 had just bought it and no record of replacement, doing all filters etc, . 190 was new timing belt , plugs, wires, v/c gaskets

I’ll also say on my S Series Saturn I got rid of the PCV valve and replaced it with a fixed orifice type and it helped it in its oil usage.

I just did this job yesterday after buying the 3 parts all together on ebay. Thanks for that recommendation!

I didn't have to take off anything in order to reach the PCV Valve. Just popped it out, fished out the crumbly gasket, and replaced all 3 pieces. Pretty easy job that can prevent loads of more expensive jobs.

Just wanted to say thank you for the write up. Changed my PCV valve with minor problems mostly due to user malfunction. I put my airbox behind me when i was yanking the PCV valve and when it came out i stepped on my air intake box and cracked it. haha.

PCV valve came out. Broke the grommet. Put in new grommet. Cleared out junk inside engine as much as I could. Waiting on the new hose from Ebay. Doesn't feel any different but I feel more at ease. Thank you!

Looking to hit the dealer tomorrow to pick up the parts. Other than cracks in the hose itself how can you tell the hose is needing replacement? Is the factory hose a hard rigid plastic or is it more pliable like the upper radiator hose?
