Doors won't hold open

Hi guys,

When I open my doors, two of the doors won't stay in that position and will close right back. They won't hold open.

It's probably a simple fix, but I don't know what to do. Looked on the forum and didn't find any info.

Your help would be highly appreciated

You need to replace your door checks. They are the metal units that you should see (if they are still there) that fasten to your door and to the frame of the door.

They wear out over time and door will not stay open.

I've been needing to do this on 2 of my doors ever since I bought my 4Runner, interested to see if anyone has a write up on this.

There are no extremely bad design flaws on these trucks, but of the several small, annoying ones I have noticed, the feeble door stays(due to pathetically wimpy design) are the most annoying. Parking the truck facing uphill gets old really fast with these things.
When a bottom-of-the-line Volkswagen has/had much beefier/longer lasting door stays than the 4Runner, something went wrong in the design stage.
Good luck with trying new ones; maybe the new ones I got were from a bad batch.

I wish they were made of metal because then we may not have had this issue.

I think they're made of some kind of hard composite plastic. They wear out so quickly. I replaced my driver side a few years ago with a junk yard replacement off one that had very low miles. It's now starting to struggle to stay open. Think I may just have to cowboy up and buy new ones.

To save about 160 bucks (I need two) I'm thinking maybe shaping hot glue or JB weld onto the plastic part to create bumps. I don't know, thinking on my feet here. Lol.

Unfortunately, sometimes that's the best and/or only option. I would probably buy new ones then to try to find some used ones.

A lot of money though.

I had to replace my driver's door and front passenger door on my 08 T4R.

Super easy to do. Less than half hour each side. Only need a Philips driver ,10mm socket, and some panels tools to pop door off. The covers on the door check pop off easily and have 3 bolts holding it to the frame and door.

You'll have to pull off door panel first, then speaker mount and then pull the check unit out. I ended up doing both door lock actuator motors while I had the panel off.
