Driver's side folding mirror repair?

Has anyone ever attempted a repair on these. The spring post retainer tabs randomly broke on my driver's mirror yesterday and it just swings freely. Maybe the black mirror and plastic finally got brittle enough in the socal heat yesterday and gave up.

I remember there were some threads on ih8mud, but those were for the disassembly of the 80 series LC mirrors. These 3rd gen mirrors don't seem to come apart completely the same way.

If you look under the mirror housing you'll see a hole and in there you can find a Phillips bolt. With a screw driver remove it and then you can slide out the mirror mechanism from the housing. See what has broken. Post a picture.

My driver's side outside mirror (1997 T4R) swings freely instead of holding in place for either "in use" or "folded back". It also pulls up about 3/4 inch at the hinge. Has anyone done this repair? Thanks.

I was able to remove the outside mirror from the housing and look into the swivel mechanism. I believe the mechanism works as follows:
1) Post, hollow - the wires for the electric motor come up the post; the mirror housing swivels on the post.
2) Spring - The spring, when compressed, applies tension to the swing mechanism. (pictured)
3) Base, of post - There are two half-globe nubs and corresponding concave dimples that when aligned hold the mirror 'in place' for use, or 'folded back'.
4) Ring, metal - The metal ring affixes to the post to put tension in the spring. (pictured)

It appears that the metal ring that has broken free of the post, therefore the spring lacks tension. I did not find any broken parts, etc. nor did I see a way to affix the ring back to the post.

Ideas / comments?

I quickly learned....just buy a replacement mirror. Cheap fix. I was disappointed that the mirror vibrates in the housing and gave the vendor that feedback.
