If I put marks where the opening was like I thought, they are no longer visible.

By looking under the bottom of the panel, feeling under it too, it seems that the vented portion approximates the width quite well. Maybe as soon as Sunday I'll likely cut as seen here...

After looking at this more, taking measurements, without cutting any metal, maximum width seems to be about 7". I will try about 6.5 or a little bit beyond that... The bottom horizontal cut, about 2" up from the floor. For those who have or might have a platform someday, higher would be needed for clearance... I think I will do a 12" vertical opening, and there appears space to go an inch or two higher.

I can't find my compact hacksaw. I might make use of a hacksaw blade if I can't find it, or one of these....

Just need to make sure none of them move too fast and melts the material. I'll report back sometime next week...

It has a been a long time, and I honestly have nothing meaningful to add regarding my 4Runner. About the time of my prior post above I received these, but have not made time to install them.

We were evacuated a few weeks back due to the CA lightning fires in our area. The 4Runner was packed with stuff, including that fridge/freezer, and it once again worked very well for us, including in the hotel room off of 110v. While evacuating, I was interviewed by the news at a local high school and when aired that evening, prompted tons of calls, texts and emails from family, friends, colleagues and neighbors, past and present. A chaotic time became even more so with all of the reach-outs.

4Runner-related, while parking at the hotel, I forget that my ham radio antenna was up (just a tad under 10’). A tree branch bent it backwards. Thankfully, by design, the motorized mount gave and the antenna itself did not bend. I simply need to readjust it to vertical, and that remains on the to-do list. The ham radios worked great as I was able to keep-in-touch with my wife in the family car using a 70cm simplex frequency.

Likely what prompts this post is my sale of the original mats last night, three of them. Not sure what I did with the driver one. Maybe it was in bad shape and I threw it away, I don’t remember. I kept the rear mat though. Thirty bucks for the three. The guy I sold them too met Timmy The Toolman somewhat recently at a local Pick-n-Pull. He was not aware of this forum, so I course recommended it. Some might remember that I keep a running tally of factory parts sold, wondering if I might hit $2,000. Just need $350 more as I’m now at $1,650:

$400 - Leather Front Seats

$50 - Factory Stereo & Amp

$75 - Cargo Privacy Cover

$50 - Skid Plates (2)

$150 - Rear Bumper

$25 - Spare Tire Crank

$200 - Front Bumper

$50 - Roof rack cross members

$50 - Front bumper carrier

$75 - Trailer hitch

$100 - Front shocks

$350 - Wheels/tires

$25 – Front brakes

$20 - Intake silencer tube

$30 – Mats (three, no driver)

BTW, I sold those Cadillac horns sometime back, but that and other items like that would not make this list though.

Outdoor projects have consumed much of my time in recent months. The bocce court won’t happen this year, but I got a lot other stuff done though. Currently I’m working on a gazebo and I just finished the concrete footings last night. I will let them cure a full month, keeping them moist, before drilling (Tapcon anchors).

Not exactly an outdoor project, but I updated our “back-up” 12 volt solar wifi system. We have three wifi networks, with the initial one in the garage, off the grid. It drives 24/7 a combo modem/router (18 watts). It, like most modems and routers, operates at 12 volts. I kept two 125 ah marine deep cycle alive for over 12 years (reconditioning with distilled water and Epsom salt). Finally decided to get new batteries (3), solar panels (two, 100w) and update the controller. Nice knowing that the internet, at least one of our wifi networks, will be up when the power goes-out, and for many years to come...

Some good news to report in this otherwise difficult 2020. The stock market recovery treated me well. I sold a position that permitted me to pay-off the mortgage with the proceeds. A 30 year loan paid-off in seven. A great feeling. In Aug, my employer announced the need to reduce costs by $1B. As is often the case, headcount would be a means to get there. I was offered an early retirement package. I had not planned on such until a year later at the soonest, more ideally 2-3 years later, for sure before our little ones began high school. After plenty of number-crunching I concluded that I can swing it and I accepted. I will remain with my employer until just after the New Year, helping with a transition. I will likely seek employment, in some form afterwards, but not sure exactly.

Back to the 4Runner, short of fixing the ham radio antenna and installing those front links, I don’t envision anything being done the remainder of this year. House projects and post-employment preparations will consume available time. I have not updated my resume in many, many years, as an example. Hope this finds everyone well.

Oh, sometime back, I found this little guy sleeping under the 4Runner on a hot day..

Nice update after a crazy year. Well played, sir. Hope you use the bulk of your new found time off with the kids. They grow up so fast.

I played some AAPL calls and tripled my money in a couple months. But I was a bit silly the other month and have lost most of my earnings. I will wait for it to go back up.

Mike, always good to hear from you. Crazy year indeed. Still working and might get asked to work through the end of Jan, which I'd be open to as it would mean another month of income, more stock and maybe even the mid-year bonus. So, no quality time with the wife and girls yet, actually even less than normal these days with all of the retirement prep added into the mix... Also, working on a living trust, with another meeting this Thursday. Finished constructing a 10'x12' gazebo, just need to bolt it down this weekend (giving the concrete 30 days to cure).

My pop went into the ER this past week, and didn't tell me until after back home the next day. He didn't want to bother me. Geez. Once retired, I'd like to think that won't happen again. So much going-on...

And you never want to hear the words camera and urethra in the same sentence. Not fun. Good results though.

Hey Mark, glad to hear someone else is playing the market, options too. I typically don't do much this time of year (Sep & Oct) as historically those are the worst months, for longs. AAPL has been very, very good to me over the years for sure...

To somehow get back on topic, one of my colleagues in RTP just shared with me today his experience using the U-Pol Raptor bed liner product; and he was impressed with the results and ease of use. They have a couple beige colors that interest me, this being one.

I miss working on the 4Runner... I still have those RCV axles to do!

Raptor liner is the only diy liner I haven’t really heard bad things about, I’ve used several other diy bed liners with horrible results. I’m thinking about going with rhino liner/linex. I’ve been told they will work with you on the price if you offer to do the prep work (remove trim/sand/mask). However for the price the raptor liner is definitely appealing. If you end up doing it I’d definitely like to see it in person someday.

Thanks for chiming-in on this topic. LINE-X got my attention alright, the tensile strength, but also the chemical resistance, where most/all others can't compete. Great to hear they work with clients who are willing and able to do the prep work. I'm interested.

Have you heard of Bullet Liner? I'm not finding a whole lot on them, and while not quite the video I was hoping for, what this stuff does, like for the watermelon, egg, the cinder blocks, just amazing. Heck, maybe all liners would protect in the same fashion, I don't know...

Haven’t heard of them. Would’ve been nice to see a side by side with other products but it looked pretty strong for sure. I think any professional company you go with you would be pretty happy with the results. I wonder if raptor liner would send out a small sample of their product to see how it compares.

Sent to Raptor Liner sales moments ago:

Hello,

Do you all send-out samples? I have a three of so colors of interest, and it would be helpful to see them in-person…

Thanks much,

Tony
++++++

I'd want to do all exterior upgrades or mods first, before doing this project. I still want the sunroof deleted, sheet metal in its place. Maybe a small vent in that location. I'm leaning toward a snorkel also. Things I'd like to do first before this project...

If this year could't get any crazier, a little after 11:30am my girls, while in Zoom classes, yelled "fire!". Heck, I first thought they were yelling "spider" which I hear quite a bit, lol.

Downhill from us, there was a fire in our neighbor's backyard. I called 911 while running-out into the yard, where I began dousing all of the vegetation I could reach up toward our house. My wife went to another neighbor's house even closer to the fire, but no one was home. I noticed a hose bib on this neighbor's house and carried a hose over there and was able to put-out much of the fire. A landscaping crew came-over to help too. Just got done speaking with a Bat Chief/LEO and sent to him a video one of my daughter's took.

I'll let you know when I hear back from Raptor Liner...
