ARB dual compressor mounting location options?
I picked one of these bad boys up during my black Friday spendathon. I wanted on board air for tires and I wanted to also get me closer to an ARB rear locker. I hope to pickup a locker down the road but want to get this mounted up for airing back up. I have researched and read what I could find concerning mounting locations.
It looks like my 2002 might offer enough room in the engine bay on the passenger side. .. perhaps... But, I have I have also seen a few people mount them in the rear cargo area, either on the driver's side wheel well or even in the rear hidden storage compartment.
Initially, the inside option sounds preferable to me. However, this also sounds like the biggest PITA due to routing both power and air lines. I imagine I would have to fabricate some sort of mount for the rear cargo option no matter where it goes in that area. I also know the can get hot and should have area for them to breathe.
The engine bay option, providing it fits seems the most direct overall but offers a slightly dirtier home. I am also trying to think of this in terms of adding the ARB air locker down the line.
Thoughts?

I hear you on the cabin noise. I suppose I could hook it up to some alligator clips tof test how loud it is. I could be wrong, but isn't it just running when either I would be airing back up, or when the, not acquired yet ARB air locker, would be active. And that should just be for clearing difficult sections, but does it always need to be running?

i just had that unit installed under the hood on the passenger side. i have an air tank in the spare wheel location. that means a lot of air lines. i was cautioned against mounting it under the vehicle, including in the fenders, due to potential wetness. inside the cab would be an option though. i imagine it'll fit.
when you turn on your lockers, the compressor only turns on momentarily. your lockers have air and that's it, the compressor shuts off.
although noisy, i think the rear storage compartment might be a good spot for it. you'd have to figure out a way to run the lines which i suppose means drilling a hole somewhere nearby in the body.
hope that answers your questions. i only recently installed the compressor and lockers.

This was one of my main concerns and why it took me so long to mount it up. But its really not that loud honestly. I have two ARB compressors, one is the small compressor and I use it for just running my lockers. I like to keep the systems separate -that way their is redundancy if a failure should occur, and it helps simplify things imo. Anyhow the single small one is almost as loud as my twin, and its outside, and under the back of the vehicle right above the rear axle.

It'll only be on (as others said) when you're actuating the locker or air up tires.
If it were me, I'd put it in the storage space if at all possible in the rear cargo area. Keeping it out of the dust and water is a good idea.
I don't mind the noise....some people might.
When I do my OBA (probably a Viair unit and tank), I'm pretty sure it's going in the rear cargo area.

i would not put it in that cubby. you want it out in the open as much as possible, these things produce a massive amount of heat and want as much cooling as possible , fresh air are a compressors best friend

Good point....though if one were placing it in the engine bay, it would see far higher temps under the hood. ***EDIT*** Regardless, your comment is spot on. I appreciate the correction. ***
But you're right....putting it out in the open where it can get airflow is definitely a 'best practice'. You may want to keep it hidden if you leave your vehicle parked in unsavory areas though. People will steal anything that's not nailed down.

i have one under the hood in my GX470, and while its nice and away from the heat sources(exhaust and radiator) as best i could manage -i put it up against the fire wall on the passenger side, it still is almost too hot. in fact this summer i popped an air hose because of the heat. granted this was after running a trail for about 90min, but still, hood had to be open to gain access to the compressor and it was just too hot. i hadnt even gotten all my tires up, i think i was on my second tire(285 70 17, going from about 15-50psi, so it was a fair amount of air). i have now added a 18" section of steel braided hose directly off the compressor going to the chuck. and that has seamed to help a lot. never had the issue again, or in my 4runner and i run the one in the 4runner way more often and use the exact same style hose -3/8" flexilla hose.

I don't run my lockers off of this one. I have the small ARB compressor for the lockers. I don't like mixing systems. It tends to complicate and lead to issues down the road, and when one develops a problem it will affect both. So this is only for airing up and other air uses.
If I was going to use this for the lockers as well I would mount the compressor in the same place is use the cabin pressure vent right behind it and run the lines out through that.

Yeah, I hear you. I may put it in the cargo area, but if I do, I will fashion something to conceal it from open view. I like to not make myself any more a target than necessary. My neighborhood sucks.

Yank out the plastic on the inside of the passenger rear storage area and put it behind the door, that's how I mounted my PUMA compressor. It's loud, but it only runs long enough to fill up a half gallon tank for my front ARB. Once it fills it up (20 sec or so) it will last all day long kicking the locker on and off.
When I air up, I'm not in the truck anyway so the noise doesn't bother me. For ventilation, I just crack the door open.

@ bandi
can help you out with a mounting bracket and position within your 4runner.

Put this thing together the other night, getting ready for great adventures!
I may look more into this thread to clean up the inline fuse.
Otherwise, super clean install, great help from Leroy himself. I totally recommend picking this up if youre considering an ARB Compressor!
