Borla xr1 vs borla pro xs
I'm comparing the two mufflers and want the one with less drone. Both are relatively the same price. It's going on my 2000 4runner 3.4l v6

They're all loud and farty tbh. The part number for the longest muffler casing will sound the least like a shart.

I've had the XR1 on the top of my list for mufflers for awhile now based purely on sound. Although I'd agree that MOST mufflers do sound "farty" on the 3.4 (really most V6's though), the XR1 sounds pretty good by comparison. The negative for me is that they don't offer it in (a) a full cat-back setup, or (b) the "right" configuration for our trucks.
Edit: This thread is doing a really good job of changing my mind to the Pro-XS

I'm scared of a) sounding like a ricer / annoying kid or b) so loud where it gets to the point where I hate driving it

Yeah I'm buying just the muffler piece, not wanting to spend 600-700 on a full exhaust

Then don't get the XR-1. I have the Pro-XS and it's perfect, louder than stock though. The XR-1 is very sharp and loud, "ricer" as you put it. There's a guy who lives nearby and his 4Runner is obnoxiously loud.

The Pro-XS is very smooth while cruising, less droning than the Magnaflow I had on another vehicle. It's louder when stomping on it, but I have a supercharger that's very loud at WOT.
The XR-1 is loud at speeds less that 25 MPH and very, very loud at moderate to full throttle.

You have a sound clip of getting on it with that supercharger? I have the same set up and I'm looking for a new exhaust.

I had one, but I lost it and don't have a way to record good audio anymore. If you search through my 3,000+ posts I posted it on here at one point. Here's a few videos that are very accurate though:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75j7dUErCMY - Pro XS, mine's a bit louder due to headers & supercharger.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yopSI4OdFiw - XR-1, notice how more more sharp the tone is, it's loud.
The whole reason why I got a Borla is because it has more subtle, higher tones more like a European performance car/SUV (which I'm a fan of but too broke to ever get one). The Magnaflows sound more like US muscle.

Thanks for the reply. I watched those videos the other day and I think I am convinced on the Pro XS. My supercharger needs some love and I think a nice pipe will compliment it nicely.

This is what your average stock, baffled muffler looks like on the inside:
Can't imagine that flows well with a supercharger. I've done so many mods since then I'm not sure how much of a difference it's made for me, but I bet if I put the stock on back on I'd be very unhappy.

Another vote for Pro XS. I have had mine on for about a year. I used the 40664, its 19 inches long and is pretty quiet. It has a nice low mellow tone. Disappears on the highway until you get into it. It sounds better than the magnaflow it replaced, in my opinion.
Now I have Headers, a high flow cat and the same muffler and it sounds AMAZING. I wouldn't recommend header. Complete nightmare.
Heres the video of how it sounds now, the headers do make it a little more "lopey"

I've had Borla "turbo" mufflers installed on vehicles for a long time, and just a couple months back, the 40665 on the 4Runner:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/BOR-40665
Summit Racing matched the amazon price and had it to my doorstep for $103. A local shop welded into place like 40 to 60 dollars (forgot).
Wife and kids didn't even notice the difference in sound. I really like the sound on start-up and when getting on the gas. Otherwise, quiet and I have not found a drone yet. Side benefits:
- much better clearance below
- 12 pounds lighter
- improved gas mileage? wouldn't be surprised
- improved performance? feels like it...

I really don't see a downfall to this then besides the one I'm looking at is only 14 inches instead of 19. I'm wondering how much of a difference that actually is.
