Good stuff. I just saw the caliper hanging there and figured I'd mention it.

I finally got the upper and lower control arms out as I've been traveling quite a bit and haven't had much time to spend in the garage. They will be getting new OEM bushings pressed in by a buddy of mine who is a master mechanic at Lexus and has access to all the fancy Toyota SST's.

I was really tempted to try the bottle jack technique but didn't want to risk damaging them.

Empty!

I also replaced the original 1998 plug wires and did plugs and PCV valve while I was in there. She definitely seems to run smoother with the new ignition parts.

Last but certainly not least is a set of front seat bottom replacement leather covers. The color match is perfect and the quality is really really high. I'm very impressed. @SlvrSupraSub will be responsible for taking care of the new seat covers.

Out with the old

In with the new

I may do the seat backs too in the future, but for now I need that money for other stuff!
Sure save me the easy work! He won't let me get under the hood with him y'all! ☹️😖😜😂

Replaced the bumper side panels from ones I found in the junkyard. Both of mine were damaged by being backed into.

Before:

After:

This one has a small ding but looks a 100 times better than the old one.

Drivers side after:

Pic of the rear carpeting with the wheel wells covered.

I need help figuring out how the carpet attaches to the seatbacks. Can someone take a look and let me know? A few pics would be awesome!

After 20 years of ownership, I decided it was time to put a little bit of love back into my trusty 4R. I'm the original owner and as of writing this '98 SR5 4x4, she has 240k miles on the odometer. It's always been a NC truck and everything still works, except the lumbar bladder in the drivers seat.

Long term plan is to put a lift on it, probably some 285's, bumpers and maybe a RTT for some overlanding fun.

Here is how she sat before doing anything.. completely virgin, including dealer installed brush guard which they would not remove, so I just kept it.

As you can see the interior was trashed. After getting a different daily driver, the 4Runner became a dog truck, in every sense of the word. I took the rear seats out so my Weimeraners could have free reign, which they loved... but the interior became just disgusting.

First step was to rip out the old carpeting. My sexy assistant @SlvrSupraSub can be seen helping here. ;) She pulled ALL of the interior, and cleaned the hell out of it.. floorpan, panels, headliner, every-damn-thing. She did an amazing job and helps keep me motivated to get the project done so we can do some wheeling and camping.

She even spent all day Saturday with me rummaging through junk yards for 4Runner stuff. This is one awesome chick!

While the interior cleaning was taking place, I had a LOT of maintenance to get her caught up on. First step, was to flush the transmission which I don't have pictures of but just watch Tim's video on it and that's how it went.

Next up was to replace the O2 sensor. I took this lame picture while crawling around underneath even though you can't see the O2 sensor.

The truck immediately ran better after replacing what was more than likely the original O2 sensor. I "might" have changed it, but I can't remember doing it so more than likely it was original.

Same goes for the fuel filter which I also replaced. I can't emphasize enough how disgusting the fuel was that came out of it. It literally looked like black coffee.

This is with a flashlight shining into. Yeah... I know.

Out with the old and in with the new.

Random shots while under the truck.

Next up was to address the cooling system. Again, original 240k mile radiator which I decided to replace as preventative maintenance. I flushed the cooling system about 10 times (literally) to get as much crap out as I could, and there was plenty.

Before

Yes, I know the brake fluid is gross too, that too will be flushed.

I got the system flushed as well as it was going to get and then swapped in the new radiator, new hoses, new cap.

Purple Cat providing security for the new radiator.

God I love new parts!

Then flushed it twice more just for good measure once the radiator was in.

20 years and 240k miles with an under carriage that looks that good? Wish my Minnesota SR5, 2 years newer and 100k less miles was in that condition.
Jealous about the south!

Today I was able to get the control arms back in after getting the new bushings pressed into them as well as the upper and lower ball joints.

Upper before - nice right?

Upper after

Now to the drivers lower

This was so bad that it literally took all my strength just to move the ball joint. This thing was flat out dangerous!

All back together... mostly.

My eyebrows instinctively raised at the sight of this and I said "Yikes!" You were riding on borrowed time there for sure.

I know. I had no idea how bad these were! Anyone with a higher mileage t4r needs to inspect them.

Update:

Ok, I FINALLY finished going through the front suspension! Our weekends have been pretty busy for the past month or so but today she's back on all 4 wheels and back on the road.

I replaced the following:

Upper control arm bushings
Lower control arm bushings
Upper ball joints
Lower ball joints
Steering rack bushings
Sway bar end links

While it was apart I did a lot of cleaning and also painted the Tundra calipers which had become covered with surface rust.

I also replaced the four shifter bushings as mine had disintegrated like everyone else's. I HIGHLY recommend this if your shifter is loose. It took maybe 45 minutes and is soooo rewarding when you're finished.

I was pretty shocked when I took it for a drive, the truck felt amazing. The vague and loose feeling in the steering is gone and it also now returns to center which I did not expect. The new plugs and wires were also obvious.

I also made some progress on the interior and converted my center console from the '98 to '99. Love it. I can also highly recommend this mod as well.

@SlvrSupraSub has made some good progress on putting the new leather onto the front seats which she will finish up soon. We also picked up some seat heaters which I need to do some wiring for.

I also stopped by to visit a friend of mine from high school and it just so happens he had THIS sitting in his warehouse and I just couldn't leave without it.

It's the one item that Slvrsuprasub and I both really like and after looking for a used one I got tired of waiting. I'll probably put it on in primer form as we decide if we want to keep the 4R white or maybe try a different color. Either way, I'm excited to put the scooped hood on.

I also will be adding limited flares in the not too distant future.

My new wheels should be here this week which I am super excited about.

All in all, the Runner is coming along and it really feels good to have her drivable again.

Good to see another join the hood scoop gang. Doing all those bushings and joints doesn't look like fun. I just did tie rods, LBJs, and steering rack bushings.

Lesson: buy the right tool. Buy nice and cry once.

Scooped hood is on. The paint is a little lighter than the original paint but I'm ok with it as the truck will probably get wrapped or painted at some point. I also got the rear hatch painted as it had some surface rust near the glass.

Also got a new windshield since my old one was cracked in several places and severely scratched.

I had the whole truck detailed and it looks a million times better, even though the detailer burned through the paint in a few spots. Again... not a big deal as I've been planning on changing the color of it at some point down the road.

I have a new set of wheels being delivered today so hopefully there will be more pics to add this evening.
