Silver Supra's build thread

After 20 years of ownership, I decided it was time to put a little bit of love back into my trusty 4R. I'm the original owner and as of writing this '98 SR5 4x4, she has 240k miles on the odometer. It's always been a NC truck and everything still works, except the lumbar bladder in the drivers seat.

Long term plan is to put a lift on it, probably some 285's, bumpers and maybe a RTT for some overlanding fun.

Here is how she sat before doing anything.. completely virgin, including dealer installed brush guard which they would not remove, so I just kept it.

Before:

Current:

MODS:
SS 1.2 lift
FN Five Star wheels in Anthracite Light Gunmetal

As you can see the interior was trashed. After getting a different daily driver, the 4Runner became a dog truck, in every sense of the word. I took the rear seats out so my Weimeraners could have free reign, which they loved... but the interior became just disgusting.

First step was to rip out the old carpeting. My sexy assistant @SlvrSupraSub can be seen helping here. ;) She pulled ALL of the interior, and cleaned the hell out of it.. floorpan, panels, headliner, every-damn-thing. She did an amazing job and helps keep me motivated to get the project done so we can do some wheeling and camping.

She even spent all day Saturday with me rummaging through junk yards for 4Runner stuff. This is one awesome chick!

While the interior cleaning was taking place, I had a LOT of maintenance to get her caught up on. First step, was to flush the transmission which I don't have pictures of but just watch Tim's video on it and that's how it went.

Next up was to replace the O2 sensor. I took this lame picture while crawling around underneath even though you can't see the O2 sensor.

The truck immediately ran better after replacing what was more than likely the original O2 sensor. I "might" have changed it, but I can't remember doing it so more than likely it was original.

Same goes for the fuel filter which I also replaced. I can't emphasize enough how disgusting the fuel was that came out of it. It literally looked like black coffee.

This is with a flashlight shining into. Yeah... I know.

Out with the old and in with the new.

Random shots while under the truck.

Next up was to address the cooling system. Again, original 240k mile radiator which I decided to replace as preventative maintenance. I flushed the cooling system about 10 times (literally) to get as much crap out as I could, and there was plenty.

Before

Yes, I know the brake fluid is gross too, that too will be flushed.

I got the system flushed as well as it was going to get and then swapped in the new radiator, new hoses, new cap.

Purple Cat providing security for the new radiator.

God I love new parts!

Then flushed it twice more just for good measure once the radiator was in.

Then we turned our attention back to the interior where we swapped out the drivers door panel (junkyard score), which was torn from many years of paws on the leather.

Good as new.

Now was time to start on the new carpeting, once I got Kit Kat off her new favorite bed.

After tracing the old carpet onto the new and doing some trimming, we stuffed it inside and started fitting, and trimming and fitting and more trimming and on and on until we got the drivers side looking pretty sweet.

Old carpet

New

This is where we stopped because it was just time to get the hell out of the garage and enjoy one of these.

Next is to finish with the carpeting and putting the interior back in.

I also have all sorts of new front end suspension parts to install including steering rack bushings, inner and outer tie rods, lower and upper ball joints, new upper and lower control arm bushings, and probably some more stuff that I've forgotten about.

Good to see you're giving her some TLC. Looking forward to see how your build progresses. I wish my better half would jump in to projects like yours.

Love seeing an original owner rig! As well as seeing some TLC being put into it. Going to feel like a whole new ride.

My gf always offers to lend a hand with cleaning any of my cars. I most definitely appreciate it, but I'm a little OCD on how I clean a car and she approaches cleaning with a bit of a bull in a china store mentality. Ends up taking longer and stressing me out more. Lol. But just bought her a new car and I want her to learn to take care of it. Her previous car was TRASHED both inside and out. I'd hate to see that happen to this new one.

Great work. Did you find new/newer carpets or did you simply clean the old stuff? I plan to do this to my 97 with 260k asap.

Also, any links to a DIY on how to properly remove the carpets? I imagine it's as simple as it sounds once you start removing seats etc, but I'd like to avoid any broken clips, ripped wires, etc .

I ordered new carpet from https://www.stockinteriors.com. They will send you free samples to find the best match.

Removing the carpet is simple, pull the seats, the center console, the sill plates and that's about it. There are a few clips to get but you will be able to see them with all that out of the way.

This girl is a thousand times neater than I could ever dream of. I have zero problems turning her loose with a cleaning rag and some spray cleaner.

Updates:

Finally finished getting the carpet and interior back in. We still have a few things to touch up on the inside. We need to recover the front seats and probably add seat heaters.

The carpet is all fitted, and while it wasn't difficult, it WAS time consuming. Lots of cutting, testing, re-cutting, testing, etc. My advice is to go slow since once you cut it, there is no going back! I'm really impressed with the quality of this kit however and would totally recommend it.

Rear seats in, the seat backs came from a junkyard as my old ones were completely trashed.

@SlvrSupraSub staying busy cleaning the new center console that we found in a junkyard. We still need the brackets so if you have any for sale, please let me know! You can see the donor front seat behind her which sacrificed it's bottom foam to be recovered.

Oops... how did that get in there????

Next, started tackling the dirty stuff. I got new upper and lower control arm bushings, upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, and steering rack bushings to install. The upper arms are out, and the lowers are about to come out, but I stopped before pulling them to go to the hockey game. Hurricanes lost.

Also planning on doing this when I finish up with the suspension.

While it's apart I may just go ahead and put a lift on it. Still have no idea what I want to do but leaning towards the Sonoran Steel 1.2 kit. Any input????

I have decided on some wheels which are being funded by some weekend sales of old Tacoma parts (wheels/tires and headlights from my 3rd Gen).

I'm pretty sure I'm going with SCS F5's in gunmetal which should look pretty cool on my white Runner, and def give it a more aggressive stance.

Oh, I also took off the brush guard. This is such a quality piece! I was very impressed but it was time for it to go to change things up. No pics yet as it's up on jack stands and I think everyone knows what a 4Runner looks like from the front.

Looking good! Was it a pain in the butt to replace the radiator with the brush guard in place? I don't plan on removing my grill, and just use a socket extension through the grill to remove the bolts.

Thanks!

No, it was no problem to get it out with the brush guard in place. Just a couple of extensions and a universal joint and you're good to go.

In for some more updates on this Runner. I love 4runners in white, everything contrasts so well against it.

Just did LBJs and tie rods. GDAMN the tierods were a pain in the ass due to the locking nut that locks the outer to the inner rod.
