So I have driven myself nuts trying to chase down a vibration and finally broke down and took it to one of the best Transmission/drive-line shops in my area...and all that they were able to do was confirm that the vibe is there and they can narrow it a little bit more for me...but it remains unsolved. I'm hoping that the resident 3rd Gen experts here can help.
Here are the known facts:
*slight semi-rotational front drive line vibe that kicks in around the 25/30 MPH range and goes away around 40MPH.
* vibe is there at those speeds whether I am accelerating/ coasting, breaking...whatever.
*it goes away entirely if I put it in 4WD
* it sometimes goes away after about 20 minutes of driving (heating up = different tolerances I'm assuming?)
Eliminated:
*Tire balance. Checked and they are perfectly balanced and yet the proper adapter was used.
*F/R Drive shafts - pull both and both are in great shape.
*Wheel bearings and CV shafts - all checked by me and confiremed good at 2 shops.
The Trans shop stated that they suspected the same thing I did...one end or the other of where the front DS connects. So either the front pinion bearing or something in the transfer case. To diagnose further they would have had to tear down one or both of them and even then could not guarantee that the issue would be solved.
They said to just drive it and try to ignore the noise until/unless it gets worse. i don't like that answer so...
What are my most likely candidates here. Is one end or the other of the front DS a known issue? Can anyone guide me towards better diagnostics?
