After my car was stripped my insurance company towed it from the police impound yard to their contract yard where it lost another $1,400 in parts. It got raped twice. Luckily I had pictures from the police yard to prove it. The yard settled for $2,000 rather than go to court, plus I got more than I paid for the vehicle, bought it back and made another $4,000 when I sold it.
That one made up for the other times I got screwed.

don't quote me on this but i believe it was based on the anticipated auction value. I'm not really sure because in the past, i've just been given a number which has been generally very reasonable.

We were rear ended hard in my 3" lifted 2000, so hard it pushed us into the truck in front. Def get a lawyer, it messed us up pretty bad, still dealing with the aftermath, truck had $8000 damage to it...... best part, they fixed it, i wasnt gonna let that go, made sure they valued it correctly.

I heard here in the states. If the insurance is going to junk it. They give you a check for the value of the car. Then you can buy it back basically for what junkyard will pay insurance.

Dont let them take it

For sure, Don't let the take it, as multiple people have said.
You don't want to lose the ability to remove any mods you added that insurance will most likely not pay you for.

Update: I sent an email asking for the appraisal value before I release the car. I also sent them some equivalent vehicles on the market currently and the list of mods and recent maintenance I have done to the car and guess what, now the story has changed and they want to repair it. They sent me their own estimate quoting parts from the junk yard.

At this point I've let my body shop pick up the correspondence. I'm super pissed as I had let the tags expire as I was told it was a write-off and now I have to go through emission testing, which wouldn't have been required had I renewed it before expiry. I am having some codes for the evap system. what a nightmare..

Dealing with accidents sucks. It has been lots of fun dealing with this - sheriff deputy slid through a stop sign and totaled out our truck.

They are self-insured and kept wanting to haul off the truck. I did the same thing as you and told them they could have it if they cut me a check for the cost and all my upgrades.

I got rear ended a couple years back. A Pathfinder killed my rear hatch and my center rear bumper. His insurance payed about $4000 to fix my 4Runner. They covered the rental while my vehicle was getting fixed.

Before you think I’m an accident magnet understand that I’ve been driving for 35 years in a densely populated area - stuff happens.
I’ve had 3 accidents in that time - all the others guys fault, and I profited from every one.

Got t- boned in my 2000 tundra. Insurance declared it a total loss and cut me a check for $9k. I bought it back as salvage for $1k, repaired it myself with salvage yard parts for about $3k, and pocketed the spare $5k.

Totaled a 2005 Forester that I had purchased for $9k. HS girl lost control of her car, crossed the center line and I clipped her back end as she crossed in front of me. Insurance cut me a check for $7k, I bought it back as salvage for $500 and sold it to an employee of the shop that did the repair estimate for $3500. All it needed was a new front bumper and some other up front stuff (radiator etc) that the shop estimated at $6k which under Va law = totaled due to it being in excess of a percentage (that I can’t recall) of the value of the vehicle. The mechanic said that he could diy for a few hundred bucks. Anyway - i walked away with a grand more than I had paid for it in the end so ... good nuff.

Just this winter I had a lady side swipe in me on my 2004 G35 at a stoplight. This one was silly! I could see a lot of scuffing but because my car was covered in dirty slush I couldn’t really tell what was going on under there so I took it to a body shop. They said that they would have to pull 3 panels and paint them. I decided to hold off until the weather got better because it was purely cosmetic and they said that they would keep the car for weeks. I needed it to get to work. The other drivers insurance sent me a check for $1700 based on their body shops estimate. Once it got nice out I washed the car and found that most of it literally buffed out! I needed a bottle of spot paint to hit a 3mm chip and pushed the dent back out with my hand. Minus the cost of the spot paint... $1690, which I promptly used to buy skids and an ARB bumper for my 4runner.

If you have modded it at all - buy it back and make it a project.

A buddy bought a Ducati that had fallen over in the previous owner's driveway.
Slight crack in fairing, couple paint scuffs.
He's had it for years now, if it's clean you'll see the scuffs.
If he points the crack out, you can see it.

Couple days of road dirt (his bikes get ridden) and it looks just like any other bike.

Something being a "total" doesn't always mean much.

Update: After holding out on releasing the car and giving them indications of how much it may be worth they decided to repair it.

I ended up taking a payout to repair it myself, of their appraisers estimate minus the tax and half the labour
