cat converter advice
Hi All, I am debating replacing the front cat on my 2000 California runner. Has anyone had issue with the bolts that hold it to the manifold pipe. I don't want to break one off. I'm about to replaced the rear cat, muffler and tail pipe. Any help is most appreciated.

Do you need to replace them? I'd just leave the cat alone unless you're looking to swap it out for a high-flow one or something. They cost over $1000 from the dealer so don't toss it out needlessly.

Yes they are hard to get off if there's rust. Seeing you are from Massachusetts I'm going to assume there is. In fact, all of the exhaust bolts are going to give you trouble. I'd start soaking all the bolts with liquid wrench or something similar now and let the heat of the exhaust work it in over and over so it'll make life a bit easier.

I already bought a new Walker 50 State rear one. The flange on the front one where they meets is pretty rusty and was hard to get a good seal last time I was there. I had to put a fiber gasket in to get rid of a leak. I also have a code for cat efficiency and I'm not sure if its the front one or the rear one that causes it. I'm concerned about where it bolts to the manifold pipe.

Sometimes the code is not actually the cat, but the rear O2 sensor itself has gone bad. You can get them for roughly $45 on Amazon, just confirm it's the right part number (you can do it here: Find My Part). That's if you have the P0420 code. I'd hate for you to go through all the trouble only to find out it was the sensor and not the cat.

I already replaced the rear 02 sensor. Fault is still there. I am just concerned the Y pipe bolts will strip or snap off. I was looking for other who have done this and if they had issues with those nuts. I am going to soak them with PB Blaster and see if they will come off. I don't have torches but do have a propane type torch with a can of map gas to heat them a little.

Okay I got the nuts off of the front cat to Y pipe. Soaked them with PB Blaster. Then ran the engine to heat them up for about 15 minutes. Put a candle on them and let the wax soak up into the threads. 2 came out fairly easy but the 3rd one was really stuck. It finally broke free and came about 1/2 way off and then was stuck again. Applied the candle again and it came the rest of the way off. Now I'm just waiting for the rest of the parts to reassemble. I feel much better now!
