Engine Wont Shut Off After Keys Removed From Ignition

Oi,

I noticed today after parking that after I turned the keys to the off position that the engine was still running. The speed, RPM's and Temp's all dropped however the engine was still very much on (rumble and exhaust). Any thoughts?

To shut the engine off I currently have to put the keys back in the ignition and turn to start, but since it is already started it kills the engine.

Any thoughts, tips or help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I had this happen on my Dodge Ram when a relay went bad. I swapped it with my fog lights relay and it fixed it. Then I went and bought a relay to replace the bad one. I know it's not a Toyota but it might help you out.

Take a look at the thread @spartacus linked to see the various possibilities and look at a representative circuit diagram. Give me your info and I'll give you the RIGHT diagram, which is key for this kind of work.

I think the relay was for the ecm, but several of the relays are identical. Just swapped it with the fog lights because it was the same part and I wasn't worried about the fog lights at the time. I assume the relay was stuck in the closed position meaning the contactors would not disengage.

These engines are so awesome, they just keep running, even when they're not supposed to.

It's interesting that putting the key to start kills the engine.

Oi,

@TheDurk the vehicle is a 96' 4Runner SR5 Auto 3.4L V6 4WD with ~300km.

It does have an aftermarket remote starter and alarm, Stinger HPM series, never had a problem with it in the 8 years I'v owned it tho.

Bit of an update, went to go try and start it today and it was completely dead, not starter trying to turn over, no auxiliary lights, just complete silence.... Battery is only ~2 years old if that.

Regards
