If I find a ‘96-‘98 tailgate, I’ll need to replace the lock cylinder and the wiring as it is incompatible.
Yes. They use the same part for the Back Door ECU, the orange one. '99 lists 85930-35060, but that is listed as replaced by 85930-35061, which is the listing for 2001. So it should all be plug and play electrically. (2001 and 2002 are clones, so it's all covered.)

Thanks again to everyone for the info.

I’ve found a 2002 tailgate in mint condition at a good price; of course it’s in a different color.

Anyone have any idea how much I should expect to pay to have it painted?

That depends on how good of a paint job you want and who does it. You'll get the best deal no matter where you go if you completely disassemble (remove seals, emblems, bezel, etc) the door yourself

Before I start poking around the local scrapyards, I wanted to make sure that a tailgate from any 3rd gen (1996-2002) would be compatible.

Thanks in advance.
I just replaced the hatch on my 2001 SR5 with a donor hatch from a 2000 SR5. I had to swap the lock cylinder and the ECU and now the keyless entry and the rear window work.

However, I have been unsuccessful in getting the rear defrost or wiper to work. I pulled back the rubber boot at the top of the hatch two of the wires in that loom had cracked casing but the wire itself was intact. I covered the exposed wire with tape to see if the exposed wire was causing my issue but no luck there.

Is this a wire harness compatibility issue or should I start looking at other components? Did you have any issues replacing your liftgate?

I know this post is old.. but I just bought my dream 98runner and the back window won't roll down due to the hatch being from a different year... Wires don't match at all..

Is there any way to make the window compatible or should I try and get a key made for the hatch and see if that works ?
*First pic is of wires that aren't connected from the body
*Second pic is lose wires coming from the hatch.
I'm shouting out for help before taking it to a shop.. Thanks!!

^ I would see if you could locate a hatch harness for your year. Much easier than diagnosing and fixing this wiring mess. Removing and reinstalling the wiring harness is not as difficult as it seems. I have done it, and I consider myself a rookie.

This might be a dead thread but im swapping out my tailgates as well. Putting a 2000 tailgate on a 98' I swapped out the group of wires from the 98' that goes from the control module into the two grey and white female sockets in the headliner.

While plugged in the plate lights and the locking mechanism using the key fob works.

Do I have to swap all the internals? including the 98 window motor, rear wiper motor, the whole works for it to be fully compatible?

Pictured here is the 2000 tailgate on the 98' limited 4runner. The grouping of wires that is hanging are the old wires i took out of the 98. These wires run from the control module, up the tailgate and into the rear headliner. The only real difference between the 98 and the 2000 groupings of wires is that the 2000' is that the white male end that goes into the rear headliner is smaller than the female adapter on the 98

Maybe there is bigger difference I am over looking, Do I have to swap out all the internals of the hatch for it to work or just the wiring?

I need to replace the tailgate of my 2002 before I sell it. From what I hear, only another 2002 would be a bolt on with no other issues because the wiring is different in other years.
