5160 for 3rd gen?

Considering pairing 5160s with 6112s on our 2000, but I can’t find for the life of me someone having success on the 3rd gens.

Anybody? Or should I just go with Icons out back?

Jordan, no help, other than I saw a lengthy discussion on the Tacoma forum about that combo, just last night actually...

I did it. 5160's in the rear. My build is tundra 5100 fronts with YY/YB trd coils and LC 8 wrap rears. I've had them on for 2 years at this point. If I remember I looked up the length of the rears that Sonoran steel was using for their 1.2 lift and applied that to bilsteins website and came up with fj cruiser 5160's being a viable option.

When I got my 6112s from MRT, I spoke with Chas of the same thing. Mentioned there is a clearance issue, but also made a good argument for not requiring those with my setup so I left it alone..
I suggest call MRT , they said they’ve done heaps of testing of those 5160s...they sell em for other gens...

Bilstein seems to have part numbers listed for 3rd gen specific 5160's on their application guide - but they aren't showing for sale anywhere... 'soon' is probably the answer.

https://cart.bilsteinus.com/Portals/...g-2018-WEB.pdf

It doesn't show up on their online application guide, just the .pdf.

For FJ/4th gen/5th gen shocks, they would be too long by about 2 inches - but that's what bump stop spacers are for. Remote reservoir mounting would be up to you.

this is what's on my truck right now... pics tomorrow. Also like I said it matches the length based on the SS 1.2 shock, the same length as a land cruiser tokico. Closely enough for me anyway. I also do run a bump stop extension.

You are 100% correct. I just spoke with corporate Bilstein. They are planning to release 3rd gen 5160s later this year. That solves that!

5160s Experience

For those interested, I've had the 5160 piggyback shocks on my 2000 for about two months now and they're kicking ass. I don't have an aftermarket rear bumper and probably keep about 100 lbs of gear in my cargo space all the time, and the shocks have been riding phenomenally. Granted, I haven't been to Moab or done any crawling with them, but they can handle snow-covered Montana backroads with ease.

I suggest you stay away from MRT. Chas left a bad taste on a lot of forums.

I see Wheeler's is selling the 5160 remote resi kit as a bolt on for the 4-Runner, but I am curious if Bilstein has approved this application. I had an issue with my 5100's leaking from the weld at the bottom eyelet after 6 months of use and Bilstein refused to warranty them because, in spite of the shocks being marketed for the 4-Runner, they are technically designed for the Tundra.

So Bilstein refused to warranty what was blatantly a manufacturer defect because, as the Email from "Junior Africa, Technical CSR, Sales Rep" stated when he refused the warranty, "These shocks were built for 1st gen Tundras and is intended for OEM coils. From a Bilstein perspective this damper is being used outside of what it was designed for".

What I am getting at is, even though Wheeler's (and don't get me wrong, I love the place and have bought a lot of parts through them and will continue to do so) markets the shocks as for the 4-Runner that does not necessarily mean Bilstein will stand behind them if there's an issue.

I love the ride on my Billies and would buy them again, just some food for thought and a possible heads up.

There *is* a 5100 application for the 4Runner specifically now. The 5160's linked there are also specifically 3rd gen 4Runner.

Check it out for yourself: Bilstein Online Catalog
