Detroit Truetrac Limited Slip
Anyone running a Truetrac limited slip in their 3rd Gen? If so, tell us about it.

I don't think so, I've asked this before with no answer. I'm going to install trutrac one day, I just replaced my pinion bearings 18months ago, I'm thinking end of this year when it's time to change the fluid. I've talked with some buddies of mine who have run trutrac, and they say it was great, no stupid ratcheting like the gorilla lockers, with no durability issues.

Daily driver or not? I had always heard full time lockers are bad on snow/ ice and tested that out on some of the slippery stuff last winter. I quickly turned the locker off and went about my business in regular 4x4 and left the transfer case open.
I have a Spartan in my '87 4Runner and really like it; but I do not drive it on the street much. YMMV

Front or rear? There are a few on here running them. A quick search gets:
Detroit truetrac
Anyone running a Tru-Trac in the rear?
TruTrac, in front IFS
There are more to go along with these threads. The alternative search described in the stickies works best for me on this forum.

They can be a nice option depending on what you use your rig for. I have had them on a couple different rigs - one in the rear and 2 in the front.

Not sure what a gorilla locker is. Once again, truetracs are a great option depending on what you use the rig for. If you lift a tire you do have to fake the truetrac in to locking by riding the brake a little - the threads talk a little more about it.
Most times the best way to get an answer is to post on an existing thread about the topic. Forum is a great resource with lots of topics already covered.

I've been using a detroit truetrac in the rear of my 97 for a little over a year now. I love it.
When driving on normal roads, you wont even know it's in there.
Only thing you have to be careful of is giving it gas through a corner when its raining or snowing, it can get a little wild.
Other than that, you won't hear it at all and never even know it's in there.

Same thing with my Aussie Locker-locked rear end, if it encounters "traction loss" it locks.
You can learn to live with this or replace tires more often if you insist on doing corner burnouts

I run Front and rear Truetracs.
I wasn't sure about the front one for a while, if you alignment is out it really antagonises it, plus you get slight "power correction" when steering under power.
Rear is absolute magic. I run a V8 and used to have real traction problems, even on the road, much better now.
I had to recover a stuck van from a muddy field (lol) all 4 wheels were spinning as if locked.

Had one installed last month, so far so good. Haven't really put it to the test yet since all the snow melted. Next year!

My plan is to go dual truetracs maybe around the end of the year. I don't do big rocks, so occasionally lifting a tire isnt a concern when a light brake tap (either manually or through TRAC operation) will keep things moving.

This^
Occasionally a bit of brake modulation is needed with a Truetrac in heavier offroad cases, but 90% of the time it just works with none needed.

I have a trutrac in the front with the factory E-locker in the rear. When I need that little extra going up a ledge it has proven to be helpful. I got a killer deal on mine as I needed to regear and found a used complete front with 4.88's.

I have been eyeing the LSD truetrac by Detroit. I daily my car so a lsd would be better than a "lunchbox" ratcheting locker.
Does anybody know if it matters if the lsd would work with a 2wd rear diff. Says it fits a 8" diff but not sure if the 2wd is 8".
Hope you guys can help! Thanks!!

Yes, your 2WD is considered an 8" Toyota

Sweet!!! Thank you!!
Not doing a 4wd swap yet so this is the next best thing for me. Been looking at ARB but between the locker, compressor and work it's too costly.
