Lunchbox Locker (Spartan, Aussie, Etc) PSA

Seems like there can be an issue with the driver side CV engagement when you use a lunchbox locker in the front of our rigs. Enough of an issue that ECGS has a bushing to replace the needle bearings. When the oil seal is set to depth per spec, on some diffs the CV will slide out enough to disengage from the oil seal and puke gear oil all over.

From Chase at ECGS:

This is a known issue to us on the Clamshell style lunchbox lockers- you are correct the CV is not retained in the same location as the stock spider gear set up which allows the CV to float outboard and off the seal.

We cheat the seal out .150 from the housing. Not flush and not inboard like manual suggests. We also sell a bushing that takes the place of the needle bearing this provides more support for the shaft which can also aid in protecting the seal. The Stock carrier is not machined for the side gear to sit tight in so there is not much to support for the shaft. Combine this with allowing the shaft to float outboard and you get a lot of up and down movement as well as in and out.

The difference in the end float between stock and the locker is only .170 but this gives you .370 end float which is to much for the seal in most instances.

If you blow up the second pic you can see my notes from many moons ago. We have cut another clip groove in the shaft before but that is a huge hassle and cheating the seal and adding the bushing typically corrects the problem. This issue is present in every locker made for the clamshells and apparently most people don’t experience the issue I am not sure why not.

https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-14...e-bearing.html here is the bushing, there is a tech video and lot of info on it- Toyota experiences noise and other issues from the needle bearing due to lack of support.

This is good tech, and a helpful reminder that when building a diff one has to be careful about CV axle fitment. I ran into the same thing when installing a front TrueTrac:

Front TrueTrac Install - CV Axle Fitment Tech

Lots of measurements and the grease test are your friends!!

I wish I would have looked at how far the old oil seal was seated before I pulled it.
