Rear Shock Mount Rusted Out
The steel where the left rear shock mounts is totally rusted out and the top of the shock is flopping around. I was investigating an ABS light and the wheel speed sensor wire on that wheel is severed. Had noted some rear end noise so this all makes sense.
Have had my T4R on rust life support for some time....welded the frame twice and the left rear axle strut bracket needs attention (those of you with rust issues know exactly where I am talking about) - had that on the list of things to do. I could drop the fuel tank, weld the bracket (can do it myself) and try to do something with the shock mount on that side but would need to fabricate something and go way back to get to "good" metal. The other side is probably just as bad. Is there anybody out there selling a pre-fabricated mount that I could weld in?
It's like your dog that is getting old and, at some point, needs to be put down but it breaks your heart. Kind of depressed.....

Yeah, he did. I found him the part numbers for the weld-in pieces. Let me know if you don't hear from him and I'll look it up again.

I love the dog analogy, I've used it before. The big difference is that you can keep fixing the 4runner. My 3RZ is & has been a family member for 19 years. When I did my e-locker axle housing swap I tackled those mounts, cross members & frame rails. Get those mounts from Camelback & weld them in.
Mine only had surface rust, I wire wheeled, encapsulated & top coated.
Edit: I also drilled a second drain hole in the top of the shock mount. The one gets clogged with mud & dirt easily.

Frame swap or fix it. At this point we need to accept the nature of the beast. Unless it was oil coated its whole life, it will rust from the inside out.
