Well don't let me scare you off it, there are some good sides to it to- screen looks good and is responsive and snappy. If the wireless side doesn't work you can always plug in to USB and it will work that way. I'd say it glitches on me around every 2-3 months.

One more thing, don't get this unless you intend only use it as a carplay device. Without a phone attached you have a very basic radio function only.

All the more reason to love my Scion head unit. 300 watts Bluetooth etc. then I put a 2013 NAV unit in.

The unit works great and has been holding up since I put it in 3 years ago. They’re phasing out that model but you can find it at Walmart online and occasionally in store or used on eBay for cheap.

That said, it has its issues. Software can be buggy, it boots up slow and is generally sluggish. If you press the button for rear cam it’ll just stay on until you power cycle it. You just learn not to do that. Lol. It also has an incredibly annoying warning screen at boot that stays on way too long. The newer firmware reduces the timeout but a hacked older firmware has it entirely removed (that’s what I use).

The ax1000 is newer and snappier and has more convenient usb/aux, but takes away dedicated track buttons and android auto for some reason.

The ax5000 is the newer variant with dual CarPlay/android auto, is super snappy, but goes to a bottom row of buttons that sticks out instead of ol’ knobby on the side(and flush!). Put this one in the GFs CR-V bc I got a deal on an open box (don’t tell her). I much prefer the look of the old ax100 in the Runner.

Thanks for clearing all that up. Is it less convenient now that they took away the track buttons on the ax1000? I’m guessing the buttons are now on the screen? Also what’s the Toyota harness? Where can I get that?

Yeah, they would be on screen. Not really a big deal. Having the aux and usb on the front is probably a lot more convenient too but I feel having them on the back on the ax100 makes for a cleaner look. The harness is just the usual aftermarket wiring connector so you don’t have to cut the factory plugs. Metra 70-1761 for our cars I believe.

It's been awesome honestly - best headunit I've ever owned and I bought it for the clean and simple looks as well as having a physical volume knob. Nothing other than a USB to Lightning iphone cord adaptor was needed. If your on an Android you wont need anything.

I have the Pioneer AVH-X7800BT, works awesome. It has bluetooth, backup camera options, gps options and the screen has a motor that retracts it for you.

I just installed an AX3000 in our 4Runner. I'm irritated that I can't power it off. My antenna won't retract unless I turn the car off. Does your ax100 or ax5000 have this same flaw?

I like that BT mic idea, and where did you get the wireless CarPlay dongle? Any connection issues with the wireless setup?

I got it from here.
iCarPlayDongle - Wireless CarPlay Dongle Converter For Any Car

Haven't had any issues, then again I've only had it for a few days. Took the 4Runner to work today, flawless streaming from Spotify and messages came through just like normal. There is slight lag, but nothing horrible. I still have the option of hooking up the lightning cable if needed.

I can’t be 100% because after the last aftermarket mast broke with only a few months use, I just said screw it and put in a whip. I think that would’ve bothered me quite a bit, so I want to say it went down when I chose “source off”.
