I did the top two only, and did not have to tear it down as much. Shifter day and night on side to side play, also improved front to back too.

Thanks for posting this useful writeup. Knocked this out in ~30 min last evening. The difference is amazing, a shifter that does not bounce around like crazy results in more relaxed driving!

I did run into one surprise....the shifter boot between the gear selector and the tranny was torn....quite extensively. So I ordered part #33555-04040 and will have to tear into it again. I would recommend for anyone doing this job to go ahead and buy that $6 boot in case yours is torn too!

Please note, the part number I referenced above for shifter boot was not correct. I'll continue to look for the correct part # and will update when I find it.

Great write up! And dammit, I should have done this when I installed my carpet kit, when the center console was removed.

Oh well, this will be a project in the future. Thanks!

gear shifter

Thanks to all previous posts about how to correct a loose gear shifter. I changed out my gear shift bushings and grommet yesterday. Took about an hour, followed all the advice from previous posts. Shifter is tight again.
Didn't bother posting pics or instructions because its all been done before. Thanks!!

Thanks for this! Just successfully changed mine out and fixed a super loose/unpredictable shifter.

RE: "white device thing"
This is important. After I reassembled I couldn't get the key out of the ignition. Had to go back in and turns out the little plastic hook that is carved into the top of the inner white rectangular piece had fallen beneath the shifter and it wasn't catching it when I put the shifter into park. Reattached it and everything worked fine again.

Help!

Help! I'm somewhat new to playing mechanic and I'm not sure what the issue is. Trying to make do on a budget. I was experiencing a couple of issues on my 2000 Automatic 4x4 like a loose shifter, trouble getting the key out, car not starting (or cranking) but after a minute trying and everything would work fine, etc. I traced the issue to this thread, got the bushings, and have followed the thread to a T. The shifter is now tighter than I can ever remember (I've had the car maybe 3 years) and they key gets in and out, but it still only cranks when I'm engaging the white lever thing manually. The brake seems to not be enough to let the button on the shifter completely depress to take it out of park, and it seems to not recognize the car is in park in the first place. I've rechecked the wires, no issues there. Sometimes it decides to work, and it shifts around fine, and sometimes it doesn't. I've been looking for a pattern, but nothing is obvious. I literally made the account to post this, though it's not my first "minor" fix. Any thoughts are appreciated!

I finally did this. Wow, I should have done it years ago, the shifter is so much smoother. The front two bushings weren't even there anymore, they had completely disintegrated.

Ramonortiz55 thanks for this post! My old bushings had completely disintegrated. Needless to say, the shifter feels much tighter. I appreciate you taking the time to post the instructions.

I used Ramon's write-up as a reference to make this video of the same job. I already knew how to pull the shifter assembly out from doing a transmission swap video but I wasn't sure how to tackle the bushing replacements on the shifter assembly and his write-up was very helpful. I took it one step further and also show people how to replace the transfer case shifter seat because these seats degrade over time and can be a source of a gear oil leak out the top of your shifter.

Thanks for the write up. I ordered the 4 bushings today. This is a high-impact repair IMO. Not too hard to do and makes a big difference in the overall quality of the driving experience!
