Extra-long crank after leaving ignition to "on" for an extended period with hot engJu

As the title states. A few times I have driven somewhere, turned the vehicle off, then shortly thereafter turned the ignition to "on." Usually this is just to run the dash blower for a bit if I am just chilling out in the woods, but last night I was just testing tail lights and signals since I noticed one was burnt out.

In any case, sometimes it will just crank for several seconds, and never turn over unless I flutter the throttle like my old Samurai. Sometimes I smell gas after this happens.

Any ideas?

I found much better search parameters. It seems the general thought is that fuel is leaking into the engine / intake manifold when hot, and this taking more air to reach a combustable mixture.

Other folks say it is possibly a leaking FPR or Fuel Pump check valve that is allowing fuel to drain back into the tank when warm. However, the fuel smell that I get when this happens points to an FPR issue, though I don't know why having the ignition on would affect this?

Then pull the vacuum line off the FPR and check for fuel present.

Sounds like the pump is on its way out possibly.

in my best old fart voice: "when I was a kid...."

bad idea to leave key set to 'on' because the points in the distributor had some kind of chance (maybe 1 in 3?) that the points were closed on their cycle when motor stopped. that could draw current and burn the points.

then came electronic ignition.

unless you did some serious prepper modding... transistors have saved us from that issue.

no problem leaving key in the 'on' position, unless your battery is bent over and wheezing.
