I think it auto plays, and then you click on it and it opens it up with sound.

Does the sound change with rpm? If so does it get faster and louder?

Doesn’t sound like a rod to me, a rod is a definite knock sound. This sounds like you have a cracked flex plate to me.

yeah it is intermittent to. RPM's usually make it go away. definitely do not make it louder and sometimes it's not there at all.

Same sound mine made when the flexplate cracked. Remove the inspection cover on the front of the transmission bell housing and check the plate. It can be almost impossible to spot, but that would be my guess. Mine would go away completely when the RPM went up.

Hard to tell but make sure you don't have a coil or wire arcing into the spark plug tube. U can pull em out one by one with the motor running and see if it goes away. That noise can echo through the engine and sound like bottom and top end noise. Injectors and fuel pressure regulator can sometimes do it too. Once I also saw a broken bracket on either the alt or ps pump that sounded kinda like that cause it was moving ever so slightly. Could also be the beginning of rod knock..maybe check your oil pressure. Also make sure it isn't something silly like the fan tapping against the shroud. Hit something lately?

It could break completely at any time, happened to me on a former 99 I had. It completely let go on the freeway, had to get a tow. I forget how long it was making a noise, maybe a month or 2.

Thanks for the input. I think first I gotta get under the truck and peek in there see if I can spot any cracks. The next debate is if I’m up to pull the tranny myself

update

Just as an update on this.
I ended up with 2 cracked heads.

While the shop was in they had to replace the timing belt and all the roller bearings and the fan clutch bearing ext. (not fan clutch itself the bearing) owner said the bearings were bad.
They looked at the flex plate and it was not it.

The noise is gone, so most likely one of the bearings.

Hope this helps someone in the future

I have a noise also ever since I put the fresh engine in. It seems like it’s originating from the passenger head. Valve clearance is good I do think about looking at the flex plate. It didn’t look like it had a crack when I installed it.

The engine has all but 5000 miles on it and oil is clean and the noise isn’t any different.
