I would of thought JBA would have made them to give extra space for bigger tires not less... However someone who bought them (albeit for a 02 Tacoma not a 99 4runner) said they came a half inch closer to the tire and therefore he needed spacers!? Was he just full of shit or what?
|
That tacoma person probably changed wheels or tires and that was the issue not the JBA upper control arm
Edit: Why are you wanting different upper control arms? If you're worried about the stock upper control arm rubbing the tire you have plenty of clearance in that photo.

With my JBAs I have more clearance between the tire and control arm than stock.

Great question! So for starters, I’m not worried about it rubbing now with the stock UCA, I’m worried about spending a bunch of money on new ones and them being different dimensions and interfering with the tire!
Now, I would like to replace mine because even though they look OK, I know they’re original going on 350,000km. The upper ball joints are also original and with my lift over the last 150,000km I notice they’re about to go, I’m not gonna spend all the money on a new stock UCA and ball joint if I can get a better aftermarket one that I can increase my suspension travel with.
Also, it’s the last piece of the front end I haven’t replaced in the last couple weeks besides the LCA (and I don’t have 4,000US right now to spend on a full long travel setup.)
Basically I just want to make sure I’m buying a part that will fit, because if I spend all that money and shipping to Canada, if there’s interference I’m gonna have a really hard time putting on spacers without fender trimming.
That said, I’ve looked at all the aftermarket options and personally and for where I live, the JBA’s are the best option for me.

Thanks a lot for the input!!! (:
Are you referring to your 89 runner? Or have you tried it in a 3rd gen as well?
Sorry for all the questions, I just really like to take the time to research things before I buy them and they don’t fit!
Have had that happen once and don’t want to make the same mistake ever again!

I also have JBA’s, just took them on a road trip to Ouray and ran a few trails with them for the first time. They gave a much better highway ride and performed awesome off-road.

I just replaced the bushings in my JBA UCAs a few weeks ago. I noticed the outer edge of one of the original bushings was torn. The other 3 were fine but figured I would change them. JBA recently updated their bushing design to improve grease distribution. Seem very nice so far.

Since this thread is still going, I'll chime in. Been running JBAs on my 2000 with the SS1.2 lift for almost a year now. Helped with my alignment and fixed some bump steer that I had been having. I keep up with maintenance on them and haven't had any issues. Still only running 265/75/16 on stock wheels so I can't say much about the larger tires and rubbing, but I have plenty of room.

Just ordered some JBAs a few days ago. Any tips to removing the UBJs? Hoping they come in soon!

I have them on my 1996 runner. SAWEET! Better clearance with my skinny 32" tires and they give the 1" added down travel. Look great and install was easy. They have a new bushing design that is made by them now. It has groves in the outside face to help with bushing "push out" I use a HP moly grease in them and it works great. Here is a picture of when i put them in!
Have as great day all!

I used a ball joint cup set from the parts store, an impact, a big f*ing pipe (6ft), and a grinder to get the steering knuckle disassembled. I used the frozen part trick to get the new retaining piece in (not sure it helped). If I remember correctly, I had some trouble getting them to slide in straight. In the end brute force got it done. Honestly, it had more to do with the sizes of the cups than anything else. I think Timmy the Toolman has some specific info in his ball joint video. If you can remove parts and use a press, go for it. The whole rest of the process was pretty easy.
Good luck. Hit me up if you have questions.

Zero complaints with the product and the company is very helpful and appears passionate about their product.
For example, I got an email telling me its about time to re-grease my bushings based on when I placed the order. Nice surprise
The new bushings are great so far! Certainly cant claim a noticeable performance difference but better grease distribution should equate to longer life.

Good to hear! I don't think I've seen a single negative thing about JBA arms, aside from only being available in red. Blue would be nice to match my Dobinsons, but nothing a rattle can can't fix
Edit: Just now noticing the sockets of the arms have zerk fittings, very convenient

Hey guys, are these control arms appropriate for a non-lifted rig? Mainly the question is if the increased caster would be a problem or not? Running 265/75R16s
