Looking at your Savage bumper with a winch installed, you'll probably have less air flow as well through the lower part of your radiator. My 98 with all the mods does run hotter than my 2000. But, my 98 is also carting around an extra 700 pounds all the time with the aftermarket bumpers, skid plates, rock rails and roof rack.
|
The aftermarket bumpers can be tradeoff in that respect. If one wants the virtues of such a bumper, I guess that comes with the territory. At least with the CBI and Savage offerings, which look somewhat similar, they have rather large openings, I'm sure to lighten them up, provide some access points, and also to permit some airflow... there might be an opportunity to channel or direct the flow, and I'll look into that later. I've gone so far as to "frame" a radiator a few years back, which allowed it to capture more air by preventing less spill-over, and forcing the air through the fins. Data logging showed that it worked pretty well...
The factory horns block air flow, up on top of course. Nothing of significance I imagine, but a little here, a little there... Adding another heat exchanger in front is detrimental to the radiator's job. The ambient air passing through the tranny cooler comes-out the back a bit warmer, then that goes through the condenser, and if that is operating, what then hits the radiator fins is markedly warmer than ambient, obviously impacting the delta we'd see otherwise. That's what happens when stacking heat exchangers though; and why sometimes it's beneficial to place one elsewhere... Fun stuff.
Back to winch talk! I have one coming Tuesday.

Maybe I'm weird but I actually like the look of the solenoid notched into the grill. I'm also a Function over Form kind of guy. Function is way more important than looks. Some people will spend money on a lift and new tires before they even take a look at the mechanical health of the vehicle.
Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox now. Happy Modding!

This, 100%. With all the modding people do to their 3rd gens, it kinda blows my mind that trimming the grill is out of the question for some. My whole plan is to cut away as much as possible to get the winch as close as possible. Smittybuilt 10k. I have no idea how long the solenoid wires are, it's been in storage for almost three years now.

I've bookmarked some good discussions on dual batteries and increased output alternators. Glad you brought that up as I should revisit that again. Thanks.

Here's a picture of where I located the winch solenoid behind the front aftermarket bumper (4xInnovations). I've got it wrapped up in electrical tape for "weatherproofing" and am planning on welding up some sort of enclosure. There's plenty of room here for it:

The X2O one will fit there too. That said, I was envisioning fog lights in those spots. Hmmm... Maybe I'll put it in the engine bay.
Thanks again.

Little of topic. But today cop pulled me over for tinted windows and no front license plates. After I drove pass a cop couple miles before lol. Anyways, I just ordered this.
Cascadia 4x4 | Off-Road | Winch Accessories Made In Canada/USA
For anyone looking to mount their plates back. They even sell one with a light bar option.

Damn, that's pricey. I've had one of these on since I put my bumper on. Plus I still have a bunch of beer money left over.

As for relocating the solenoid, I had fun doing mine. It really wasn't hard. Plus you can install switches in the cab to operate the winch as well, if you want.
Really, cable isn't that expensive, and you can install the lugs on it yourself with a cheap hammer "press".

Use this with a 5lb sledge for the lugs: Here.

psraff good to hear from you. Haven't seen you around much lately... Thanks for chiming-in and for sharing your switch install.
The unit I ordered comes with a wireless remote, but unfortunately that seems to be the primary knock on it, from the reviews I read. As I recall it's because the battery drains easily, so users have to remove the remote's battery, or something like that... It can also operate wired, so maybe I'll use it that way. I find your solution very appealing though.

You welcome. You're right, I did drift away from this for a bit. I haven't worked on my trailer either... What I have been doing is remodeling my house. Removing baseboard heat, putting in in-floor heat, new floors, paint, trim, interior doors, a few extras here and there. I actually have the flooring guy here today doing the last bedroom and hallway (only thing I won't do myself. It's more cost effective for me to have someone install the floor). All this to raise the appraisal value and hope to move out of Alaska this year.

I hear ya and know about house remodels, that's for damn sure. From 2012 to 2014 I busted my ass getting our old canyon home ready for the mkt and sold. Bought a new place before that sale, a fixer-up of course, and worked on both for a good part of a year (homes about 20 minutes apart), until I worked myself into the hospital. That slowed me down, lol. The last few years, working on the "new" place, which is like 95% done... I so look-forward to working on the 4Runner for a change of pace.
Best to you on getting a desirable sale; while not jeopardizing your health!

Thanks! All of this to try to move down to your neck of the woods (Arizona most likely). Seems like every day Alaska is getting under my skin more and more. For instance today. I went to Fastenal for the nuts for the O2 sensors (I found a thread that had a link to their page showing the exact nut I needed). Their answer was. "Oh no, that's not a popular nut. And metric. No we don't carry that. Closest place that has it is in California." I can't even get a fricking Stainless Steel metric nut with the Flange on it up here without trying a dozen places!!!
Yes I know we've strayed off topic a bit.... LOL

Alaska to Arizona, wow! That's a damn radical change. Arizona has my interest too actually, areas with some elevation though (less heat).
To help get this back on the track, I got this a couple weeks back...

Just re-found this thread while searching for other stuff like winch covers...
As a matter of closure, I got it installed recently.
With respect to the control box, the side mount option was not feasible with the Savage bumper and at the top, I was not keen on blocking yet more precious airflow, I stuck it inside the bumper as rkntoy showed earlier, but in a different orientation to allow for lighting (Baja Designs Squadrons. wide cornering).
Now back to finding a cover! Oh, and I think I'll get that flip-able license plate holder Matt referenced earlier...
