New cheap snorkel on the market: the eBay “ARB Safari” snorkel

I found this on Tacoma World a few weeks ago and haven't seen anyone on here post about it yet. It’s a knockoff of the ARB Safari snorkel and the price is right! I picked this up in December for only $98. I believe they’re increasing the price a bit more now, but the quality and fitment are what I’d expect from the $400 original. IMO it looks so much better than the Hilux 167 snorkel most people are running too.

Install went fairly well. It’s pretty self-explanatory and the template is usable. I had an extra fender that I tested the snorkel on and it worked, but I couldn’t determine a-pillar fitment without mounting it to the truck (which I didn’t do).



The a-pillar mount is aluminum or stainless so you don’t have to paint it if you don’t want.



The plastic is high quality and the thickness is really consistent. From the other thread on TW, it seems like others are finding the same:



I used the template to determine the location of the 3.5” hole, but didn’t drill the mounting holes yet:



The snorkel contacts a metal lip inside the fender. I forgot to take a picture before persuading the metal out of the way, but it’s right below the square cutout. I just used a mallet and it worked perfectly:



I’m happy I didn’t drill the mounting holes from the template because when I lined it up with the a-pillar, it wasn’t perfect. By using a carbide bit on a Dremel, I elongated the hole lower and further back. This aligned the body line and pillar mount better:



Here’s a shot of the elongated hole. As you can see, it’s mounted further back than the template shows:



From there, I loosely mounted the stock intake tube to the included coupling. I found it easier to unbolt the intake tube from the truck and mount the assembly (snorkel, fender, intake tube) to the truck. I bolted the snorkel down at this point:



Then it was as easy as remounting the fender, aligning the intake tube to the elbow, and drilling/riveting the mount to the a-pillar:



I’ll take some better photos later, but here’s some of the finished product:











I didn't put the dumb sticker on. I'm planning to 3D printing something cooler later:

Wow, that turned out really nice! I really like this style where the snorkel tube doesn't run along the outside of the fender vs. the 4runner specific ARB one. I guess I know what I'm grabbing with the next ebay 15% coupon.

Great work!

I'd press the "like" button, but... you know...

I wish this was around a month or two ago. I have an ARB one sitting in a box that I am about to put on. I would have been happy to try this option instead. This looks great. Fitment looks good as does the overall quality. Well done on the write up. Do you feel that you needed anything beyond the hose clamps for tight fit? I remember reading how someone else used silicone in addition for air tight seal.

Thanks! Happy to finally have something "new" to provide to the forums.

The coupling that comes in the kit is really tight with the hose clamps. I'd be confident those are sealed tight. But between the stock intake tube and the elbow is where I'd add silicone to seal it better. As you can see below, the only thing holding these together is a little foam that's really deteriorated.

Cool. Good info! Yeah, I had to purchase a Tacoma tube that comes off the elbow. At some point, pretty sure 2001-2002 for sure, stopped with the long tubes like you have, and started putting on a shorter piece there. In order to connect the ARB, or your style parts, the Tacoma intake piece is needed.

But this gives me good info for the install. My wheel well liner might be going away due to the larger 35s getting fit into that area. With that being the possibility, I can't just have an exposed intake tube taking everything from rain road spray off tires, to water crossings out on the trail. Not to mention, it will be nice to have an option to run a pre-cleaner during the very dusty months here.

OP, awesome little writeup and clear documentation. Most guys I've seen on here install the snorkel without removing the fender- did you have to in order to hammer down that metal lip that was in the way? Or did it just make it easier...? Thanks

I see they are out of stock on both sites right now, I have always liked that design, so you didn't have to buy anything else to put this together! Can't beat that,,,I'm gonna keep an eye on these and see if they come back soon.

Bought this 99 in 01 and haven't let it go since! Valve dropped at 195k so I rebuilt it with reman heads, new rings and one new piston...tough to find the correct numbered one but I did...still had the original hatch...I soaped it and did a light hatch to help the new rings seat...that was in 2015...since then I did a basic lift and put some VTX 18x9 inch wheels with 0 offset...Ive grounded the rear locker, ran a diff extension into the gas cap, did the hood piston mod...GM Alternator...13WL brakes..30 year ASE Master Tech with more tools than sense, so I quit everything and work at home now.

Looks great!! I've been thinking of putting one on as well.

This one is interesting - I might put an offer down as I do like the longer arm.

It has the STH167RAA stamped on the inside just like the Wotefusi brand from Amazon that everyone else uses but the Ebay version is way cheaper.

Looks great, and a great write up. I’ve been thinking about getting one as well, but I would look like a poser, as I will never ford water so deep that I would need a snorkel.

In terms of actual water proofing is the ARB Snorkel built differently? Are there gaskets used between the sections or something?

It is out of stock now but I might give it a try when they get more, doing this 100% for poser, mall crawler looks, I never drive through deep water

That looks good. I would not drill holes into the a-pillar. When I did my snorkel. I used a zip tie to hold the snorkel to the light bar mount. And double sided tape. A pillar is small, and if it ever rust out from the holes. That’s a shot spot to fix.

I always thought snorkels were more for show and didn't really do much. That was until I was in Moab with 4X4 friends and we watched a guy hydrolock the engine in his jeep. He was ripping through a large puddle (maybe more of a small pond) that was a bit shallower than the height of his tires, he had gone through it a few times and then suddenly the engine quit. He tried to start it again, but to no avail, just the sound of the starter straining against a seized engine. We went over to see if we could assist in any way. While pulling him out, I overheard one of his jeep buddies say wrangler JK's have a bad intake design and its not that uncommon to hydrolock engines in the new JK's.

Lessons learned: Snorkels actually do work, and its probably best not to go in semi deep water unless I absolutely have to.


Anyway....that snorkel looks totally rad on your 4Runner, good write up

Can't believe more people haven't jumped on this snorkel.

I went ahead and bought it since it seems like every time they get more in stock, they bump up the price. Thanks for posting the install.

@Atomic6 Do you think removing the fender is required? Some on TW mention that the upper mount of the snorkel is basically impossible to get to if you don't. Albeit, only 2 may all be that's needed to secure it to the fender. Also, was the antenna in the way? I have a power antenna so I'm thinking the motor will be in the way, which may require removal of the fender anyways. TW guys also state removing the fender flare to access the inner fender splash guards. I haven't looked under my fender specifically for this reason, but is this required for us?

I put silicone where the plastic connect. The rubber hose doesn’t need it. With the clamp right it’s water right.
