Toyota 4runner service manual

Found a guy with OEM Toyota service manuals (has both) for a decent price.

My question is should I look specifically for the manuals for a 1998 (what I have)

Or would the manuals for model year 99 (what he has) still be beneficial and cover a lot of my 98?

Thanks

You can use the '99 manual for most of the work on '98, but a lot of the differences in areas such as wiring diagrams will frustrate you, or could lead you down the wrong path.

Either get the '98 manual, or just use the free '02 online version and be aware of the wiring differences. Complete 4Runner Service Manual 1996-2002.pdf - Google Drive

'98 is ideal, but '99 is much better than '02 for Vol; 1 and 2, esp. if you have 5-speed or 4-cyl which did not exist in '02. For a wiring manual, you want the same year but that is not in the two volumes. The main problem will be on some diagnostics which give pin locations on the ECU. Those always change each year. If you have the '98 EWD manual, you can figure out how to adapt. Almost all the mechanical procedures, torque values, etc. will be the same '98 to '99. Not so '02 to '98.

Wow - I had no idea something like that was available, without having to buy it. I am a dummy about Google Dive - is that particular manual something you uploaded to Google Drive yourself, or was it just floating out there? Reason I ask is because I'd sure like to find something like that for my daughter's '03 Rav4, and other daughter's '03 Mazda Protege5, for which I have found virtually nothing worth buying, even from Chilton, Haynes, etc.

I forgot that I had a link to another site, for a '00 FSM. That should be much closer to (if not identical to) a '99.

Manufacturers have to make digital service manuals available. A $15 3-day subscription will allow you to download (legally!) anything you want from Toyota. Not sure about the specifics for Mazda.

That sure beats paying $20-25 a pretty much worthless stack of papers (Chilton or Haynes manuals). Got one of those for daughter's RAV4, and found out why they keep them wrapped in plastic in the store - so customers can't open them and see how utterly worthless they are. Well, at least they do give you fluid capacities, which is about the only useful information in them.

I was hoping to find a freebee like the T4R one mentioned above, for my daughter's cars. Being unemployed, $15x2 is hard to come by.

It's pretty hard to come by free FSM for any vehicles. We are pretty lucky to have the ones we do.

For instance, I cannot find a pdf of the FSM for my 2011 Camry (probably one of the most produced vehicles on the planet).

Oddly enough, I was able to find the FSM for my 2004 Acura TL.

The next best thing is to find a used FSM on ebay but even they are hard to come by.

What @phattyduck mentioned is the cheapest easiest way to get specific MY manuals. Had the generic 96-02 that's free needed EWD for 01 grabbed all with subscription. Laptop or print it out nice options.

I had not seen this one before and just downloaded it. I don't see the "Wiring Diagrams" section that the 2002 FSMs have. Does it not exist in this one, or is it in a different section?
