Mine has a leak on the passenger side, and its coming from the area where you're supposed to add sealant to it. So I might as well do them both while I'm in there.

Hopefully this is my last question, Ive looked at the diagram on japan-parts and I can't seem to locate the bolt that holds coils to the Valve Cover. I see the 3 that hold the valve cover to the block 91551-80660. Would anybody know what those 3 are for each coil?

Thank you.

Hate to bring up an older thread, but was anybody able to find this bolt? Doing my valve covers and need to replace one of these bolts and my local dealership is claiming that no dealership has this bolt any longer as its discontinued. I see camelback has it, but I'd rather not pay $20 for an 80 cent bolt.

Anybody happen to know what size it is so I can pick one up from a hardware store?

Just pull one bolt out, go to Lowes bolt dept, screw it into the tread gauge. That will tell you what size it is.

Josh- I have an extra OEM VC bolt that's all yours. Just cover shipping.

Sure I'll take it just because I like OEM. If anyone else ever needs one; I took another bolt to HD and it was an M6 flanged bolt.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, could not find a more recent discussion on valve cover bolt size:

@blarblarjosh (or anyone), do you happen to recall the thread pitch of the M6 bolts you purchased?

Sorry it's been a long time since I did this. Wish I could help more than saying just grab one of your bolts and run over to your local hardware store and test it.

Right now i'm replacing all fuel injectors on my 5VZ and it's funny how loose all valve cover bolts were when I checked them. I tried to hit em with my torque wrench but with the past experience of cracking my original covers and having to salvage used ones from a junkyard, I was afraid of using my torque wrench as it wasn't clicking so I just used my open end wrench and snugged them all in an X pattern (loosened all bolts first then tightened).

My theory is the grommets get soft over time and need to be tighten every once in a while.

I think the grommets are meant to be soft. They compensate for expansion and contraction of the cover. While the get brittle, they shrink. As a result the bolt no longer has upward tension and is able to back out much quicker from heat cycling.

The key is to check and tighten them over time because the washers do harden and shrink, allowing oil to pass the gasket, which then speeds the decline of the gasket itself.

Not 100% preventable but definitely manageable and with attention, you are able to extend the life of the VCG seal and reduce the leak potential
