Question 4Runner a truck?

I've always argued with my girlfriend about my 4Runner because I like to call it a truck while she says it's just an SUV..which it is..But when getting tune-ups and stuff on the 4runner the reciepts say Truck on it...For some extra defense..what are some reasons why the 4Runner is a Truck?

-thanks

The 1st and 2nd gens were built on truck chassis. so they can definitely be called trucks. The 3rd gen chassis was changed, so it is less of a truck, more of an SUV.

I still call mine a truck. An SUV to me is something like a Trailblazer or Highlander. Worthless off-road.

body on frame, solid rear axle, truck-like chassis

i mean, when you come down to it, how do you define a truck?

i never really called mine a truck till i lifted it and put some aggressive tires on it.

Trucks would be for men and leave the SUV's for soccer moms

I consider it a truck but it's also a real SUV compared to what is taking more utility out of the term SUV which most are just glorified station wagons nowadays.

rides like any truck ive been in. also, im pretty sure its on the exact same chassis as the tacoma?? i could be wrong.. but the tacoma is a pickup TRUCK, so if the 4runner shares the same chassis, then it must be a truck as well. someone please correct me if im wrong..

C'mon guys, it's an SUV.

Although I agree that it is harder and harder to define which is which cause trucks now sport 4 doors too look more like SUVs, and SUVs are looking more like trucks with their more durable styling, I think anything with a truck like BED, is a truck, all closed up, and it's an SUV.

Here's an actual definition of a truck. LINK.

I agree that it sounds more manly to call our 4Runners Trucks, but as much as I love my car, it's still and SUV to me.

Also, have you ever seen a stripped down bone-stock 4Runner? Looks more like a Station-Wagon than anything else...

Well the Tacoma and 4Runner never shared a frame, the earlier truck and 4Runner did though, the 3rd gen Runner was the first to have its own frame not shared with a pickup. This is good as the Tacoma was never fully boxed while the 3rd gen Runner is, well there is like an inch at the end that's not.

Personally after owning one mini and 2 Tacomas I can say my Runners did not drive like a truck, the Runners ride is much better than the truck, IMO. I call it an SUV, it just happens to be an SUV with real off road capability. To me any real body on frame wagon style is an SUV, those wimpy unibody designs are all cross overs and not real SUV's.

It's an SUV, but by definition can be considered a truck.

My T4R has 4wd, metal bumpers, large offroad tires, a frame mounted trailer hitch and class III towing capability. It's a SUV, but I consider it a type of truck. It can haul and tow like a truck. Most SUVs are crossovers not intended for towing or offroad driving. They really should be called SUCs, sport utility cars, or better yet SUCks!

Real trucks have a bed, a frame, and a leaf sprung real axle. But on the other hand, real SUVs have full independant suspension and are unibody.

So we're somewhere in between. Just call it a truck, its closer to that side of the spectrum.

1 vote for truck. Not a pickup-truck, but still a truck. It hauls and tows, which I think is what helps define a truck. When you truck something, you haul or tow it.

Look at semi tractors, they are called trucks and they don't have open beds, necessarily.
