Help needed with dead speedometer

I’ve had an going speedo/ABS issue with my 98’ 3rd Gen SR5 (225k Miles) for about two years.

About 2 years ago my speedo started to become intermittent. It’s got steadily worse over time to where it now only registered my speed about 5% of the time. Until recently it never threw a check engine code for “vehicle speed sensor”. In addition to this about one year ago my ABS light came on and has remained on since...ABS no longer functioning.

I’m starting get frustrated because the vehicle no longer passes emissions due to the Vehicle speed sensor code. I have removed and cleaned all 4 ABS sensors of metal debris etc. but no change. I don’t care much for the useless ABS on this car but really need to get the Speedo functioning properly again. One shop told me it likely needs a new ABS module (is this the part in the engine bay with all the bake lines leading to it?) but it doesn’t make sense to me that the speedo stopped working before the ABS. Since the speedo is still intermittent wouldn’t that suggest some kind of “lose connection” or something?

Has anyone else has speedo issues?

maybe start here?

3rd Gen ABS Front Wheel Speed Sensor Test and Replacment

I know these parts from the junk yard should be pretty cheap. I think I just tossed a good ABS module because I.... well I would have shipped it to ya for cost of shipping but it's way to late.

Hey there, I put a 3.4 from a 1996 4Runner 4x4 m/t into my 1994 4Runner 4x4 m/t, and I wired up the vss, but don’t have the speedo working yet. I think it’s because of the abs module playing a role in 1996, and absolutely no role in 1994. Since you did a similar thing would you happen to know if there is a particular wire in the abs module wiring I could tap into / cut and run to meet with the G-R wire that goes to the Speedo on my 1994?
