Engine for Gen 3

Can a 2002 v-6 be mated to a '99 manual 5-speed/4wd?

Yup its all the roughly the same. Do a quick google search and you'll find lots of info on this swap.

Keep in mind you'll have to re use your cable operated 99 throttle body, the 02 is electronic.
The mechanical side of the engine should be similar. Color coding on the wire harness could be different.

You'd have to swap the wiring harness from the '99 on to the '02 motor, among other small things.

This.

You will definitely need to swap the engine harness over. I had to do this when swapping a 99 motor into my 97. All of the connectors are the same on the engine side but are completely different on the ECU side. You'll have to pull the upper/lower plenum off to get the some of the connectors off.

I thought it was going to be a real PITA but it wasn't bad at all. Took me maybe an hour since both engines were on stands in my garage.
