Hitch has no stickers. I'm sure it has been painted. Judging by the amount of rust/corrosion on the rear hatch struts, I'm guessing the frame and everything underneath is pretty well nuked.

Well, she's listed on craigslist: Beautiful 1997 4runner needs head gasket - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

If there isn't much interest over the next few weeks, I'll be taking what I want and parting out the rest.

It's definitely not a rust bucket however there just isn't much love for 3rd gens in my area.

Thanks everyone for the input!

In most other parts of the country, this would probably be unacceptable. but having lived in NY my whole life, I know that this is better than 95% of 3rd gens that have lived their lives in the rust belt.

For sure. It's definitely all relative. And I'm actually surprised at how good that frame looks. Especially with how f'd the rest of the components are.

Looks pretty nice actually. Do you have any pictures of the inside of the frame where the rear lower control arms attach to the mounts on passenger's and driver's side taken from underneath?

Wow! The owner might've cared enough to paint it! Not a bad sign actually, but the stickers fall off. If the hitch was bad then the spray paint would look all rough and crappy. Hatch struts ain't too bad. These things can get little surface rust spots. Not abnormal. The amount of work it takes to keep a 4Runner looking like a vehicle out west is insane though. My nice one is only so nice because I've been OCD about it since I was 8.

Is there a way to get a picture of inside the frame here? If so, I’ll take that photo tomorrow morning!

Definitely true. But it's a sign to make sure to investigate further. Not hard to make a hitch look clean again. And for every rig properly protected, there are probably hundreds where someone just covered stuff up with black paint. I'm not saying that's the case here. Just some signs to make sure to be thorough when inspecting.

Plenty of life left in this truck. Rust inhibitor followed with a corrosive preventative lubricant (WD-40, Fluid Film) and it will serve many more miles.

Hope it sells as opposed to being parted. I've seen several non-wrecked 'Runners at the salvage yard that had a lot of potential.

I would fix that 3rd gen up in a heartbeat. It's not that bad at all, I bet mine has more rust on it and it's holding up just fine.

With some love, that could be a very nice "beater" for someone.
