my '02 Sport

So, after my '02 SR5 was rear-ended and it was determined that it wasn't financially feasible to keep it (ask me about RI salvage rebuilt laws sometime), I was bummed, to put it mildly. I had some great memories and a bit of work put into that truck, and looking back, it's been one of two vehicles I've owned that I really grew attached to.

RIP Toyertle the Turtle

However, they say every cloud has a silver lining, and I'm hoping that's the case here. Meet my new Thundercloud Sport Edition, 2Yertle:

With dog for scale, haha:

Just turned 200K and is in nearly all ways in better shape than the previous 4Runner (knock on wood). Haven't really done much to it yet aside from installing a new head unit and new speakers in the front. Currently wrestling with the speakers in the back as I got some 5.25" replacements that are unfortunately too deep with the adapters I have, and the rear window hits instead of going all the way down. Back to the drawing board. (And if anyone knows any decent plug and play speaker adapters for 3rd gen rear doors that work for a 5.25" speaker and allow decent clearance, feel free to let me know. I probably need to make something work with what I have, but unfortunately, I'm not the handiest dude in the world. I have flat adapters that are specifically made for the 3rd gen and are in the same shape as the stock plastic panels with a bigger cutout, but they aren't very thick and the speaker mounts flush, so the window doesn't clear. I also have some additional universal speaker adapters that offer more clearance, but they leave large gaps between the speaker and panel and door, which sort of defeats the purpose of getting improved sound. I'm looking for a good seal.)

Anyway, that's where I'm at. I'd love to do more, but well see how much money and time I have. Both are currently in short supply.

Not sure if it's just me but I don't see any of the images posted. Hopefully you didn't copy and paste them directly from your computer. That won't work on a forum. You have to either upload them or host them on a picture hosting site like Postimage.org — free image hosting / image upload.

All fixed. Dang shame about your first one. The new one looks good though!

I had my 01, which looks a lot like your new one except mine is silver, running at peak perfection with just 147k miles. I bought a new Motorad radiator cap via amazon which said it fit my 01 and it did but it didn't allow the coolant to transfer to the reservoir tank when hot so the top hose blew off and blew both head gaskets. I'm hoping that's all it is. I may need new heads or even a new engine. Won't know until it's apart. Only had it a few weeks.

Lesson to the wise; be very careful about installing new radiator caps. Even with these good engines; one overheating can trash the engine.

Lookin good.

Crutchfield online can probably help you with speakers.

Crutchfield is actually where I got the speakers and they came with adapters. They require a bit of redrilling in the door itself, which would be fine on paper. Unfortunately, however, the adapters are listed to fit either 5.25" speakers or 6.5" speakers; I got the 5.25" speakers (as Crutchfield lists them as a fit for my vehicle with the included adapters), but unfortunately, the adapters they included leave gaps in between the adapter and the speaker itself. Picture so you can see what I'm talking about:

I'm obviously holding the speaker and adapter together and it isn't screwed in/ mounted, but you can see the ring of space around the whole thing. Plus the "holes" for the screws to mount are really more like slots -- mounting this thing seems sketchy at best. I even chatted Crutchfield to confirm they were the right ones, and the rep said yes. I think I'll have to work with something else.

The other ones I tried were these, but they were the ones that were too shallow, and the window hits.

Here’s some speaker adapters for the rear doors, they make the same ones for the front as well. They worked great for me.
