what exactly are you asking here? are you trying to take an auto dimming mirror from another make and model and put it in your truck or are you trying to put in an aftermarket one? I know that a 2001 Lexus lx470 (land cruiser 100 series) had one and it might fit in your truck.

I've been thinking about this too. One of my work vehicles is a 2002 Silverado 3500, the rear view mirror is self dimmimg, also has temp and compass displays. Every time I'm driving it I wonder how much of those mechanisms are self contained and how hard it would be to fit one to my runner... maybe someone here knows?

PS not so sorry for somewhat hijacking this thread

PPS - I think OP is asking if there was ever a 3rd gen with a self dimming mirror and if they could swap it out easily if so. Not an expert but I don't think that was an option.

I want to add a dimming mirror to my 2001 4runner. I was wondering how to wire it up. And what mirror to get

People aren't here to do the work for you. If someone has done it, please search for it. Otherwise you need to put in the effort to figure out what'll fit and how to do it.

You can put any mirror on the Toyota, there is no special connections. I used a chevy auto dimming with temp and compass. They can be had on ebey for $40ish dollars. I wired it up the the switches near the sunroof. Works great

I'm here to help people as well and share knowledge. Posting that you want all the information just given to you isn't being helpful to anyone but yourself.

In the process of doing this to my '96. At least with the set up I have, you'll have to glue a mirror button onto the windshield. You'll need to pass a pair of wires through the dash into the engine compartment for the sensor. Sensor would typically go somewhere behind the grill, but not too close to the radiator so it would pick up any residual heat.
