Do You Carry Weight in Your 4Runner to Smooth Out Ride?

I previously owned A 2001 4Runner and then purchased a 2011 Jeep Wrangler two door. I regretted selling my 3rd Gen so I sold the Jeep and bought another that is identical to the one I sold.

Like the first one, I installed OME 881/906 springs. I found the 906s to be to stiff and tall so I switched them out for 2007 progressive rate FJ coils. Same issues.

I found that both springs rode smoother and better when I had at least 160 pounds in the back over the wheel wells - the equivalent of somebody riding in the backseat.

Generally the Jeep drove smoother and felt more planted and less skittish than my 3rd Gens.

Curious to know if anyone else has deliberately put weight in the back of your 3rd Gen to smooth out the ride, and if so what springs are you running and how much weight?

I have a 99limited with a 4 inch rough country lift and felt something similar, handled smoother in a way

Stock and yeah the more weight the smoother the ride. I've carried up to 800lbs of corn in back seat and back area, Super Smooth and rear only drops 1/2", still looks level. Engine hardly feels it.

On a regular basis, I've got about 150 of tools/stuff back there and sometimes throw in 2-50lb sacks of corn, takes the edge off the jitteryness.

I wouldn't drive around with unnecessary weight added, but when I do put 400-500 pounds in the back, it gets way smoother.

I just drove my friend’s V8 Range Rover, a tank, while he put in the FJ springs and it drove beautifully. Apples and oranges but clearly weight helps!

If it's smoother, why not? Fuel efficiency already sucks and I don't really care about that anyway..... Smooth ride is where its at!

Agree-I might build a sleeping platform to hide the extra weight underneath. Makes it drive more like a Land Cruiser!

I usually don't carry weight just to make it more comfortable, but it's an interesting idea. I will start testing this

Have OME 881's & 890's 90004 & 60073 shocks 12k mi on them. AOR plate bumper 11#'s heavier than stock bumper, Stock rear spare underneath.
Ride is good overall some types of bumps give off a jarring type ride.
Other day taking rear locker diff, ring and pinion set, master rebuild kit to shop noticed how much better rear felt, that load is right at 100#'s extra,
Still had jarring feel on front, winch I purchased for front 75#'s, think that will smooth out the front, not installed yet.
Till I get rear plate bumper built will be riding around with 100#'s of free weights in cargo area,

Added OME lift kit also. In general, I love it, but the ride is harsh with just one person in the vehicle.

As it is a daily driver, I put a couple bags of cement in the back wrapped in plastic bags, (96 kg, 211 lbs). This made a huge difference in daily ride satisfaction, but is occasionally inconvenient when I need to put larger items in the back.

If ya'll are concerned about the ride of your 4runner, why do you own one? It's supposed to ride like $hit. It's a truck. Go buy a Lexus if you want your @ss cushioned.
Adding weight to the underpowered thing is silly and just so you don't actually have to "drive" the thing is asinine.
What a bunch of sissy's. haha!

OME lift kit shocks/struts are known for their harsh ride perform well offroad.

The OME springs are designed for you to be carrying a constant load in the back of the vehicle. They ride like crap without it.

As for myself, I have a subwoofer, 2x 50lb. bags of sand, tools, a recovery kit and a Hi-Lift jack in the back. 285/75 spare tire and a tow hitch. I added the sand bags to get the ride height and ride quality I wanted. The LC 7.5 Wraps ride too high and are too jiggly without the extra weight. When loading up for camping/adventures, I remove the sand bags and they ride great and deal with my typical load.

The Downey Off-Road 3" linear rate springs I used to have were the best riding rear springs I've ever had on this truck. They also dealt with the loads I typically have for camping and I didn't need to have a 100+ lbs of extra weight back there all the time. I wish they were still in business...

Just swung by Lowe's and put a 60lb. bag of tube sand in next to the four 40 lb. bags of pellets in for a total of 220 lbs. in the cargo area as low as possible right behind the rear seat. It’s the equivalent of having one big person in the back seat, with a lower center of gravity.

After feeling every little bump with no weight, I was exhausted when getting out of the car. The extra weight just makes the truck less jittery and squirrely and really like a Land Cruiser I recently drove - but quicker.

I may exchange the lighter pellet bags for fewer sand bags. Will let you know how it feels over the next few days.
