Hands down for what you describe is the BFG KO2. I run 285/70/17’s.

I e got the K02’s. Fist time using an A/T type of tire. So far they are better then expected.

I'm going on 8 years and over 40k miles on 285/75-16 goodyear duratracs. I have zero complaints that some speak of. Great in the snow, great on/off road. Mileage on my rig has always been a solid 18.x mpg since buying it bone stock 9 years ago.

I'm running the 265 hankook dynapro ATs on 16" rims half of the year, and in the summer (wheelin season) I swap out to 17" rims w/32" MTs that ride rough af lol

If you want your speedo and odo to stay accurate, don't go bigger than the largest factory size (265/70R16)

I just ordered my 5th set for my 5th gen. So far here's what i've used.

285/70/17 KO2 - Very good tire in all road conditions.

295/70/17 Ridge Grappler - Very good tire in everything but rain. Worst tire I have ever had in the rain.

285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W - Great tire in all road conditions, best tire I have ever had.

On there way are a set of 295/70/17 Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 tires which seem to get great reviews, we'll see!

Michelins are the superior tire choice. They just make the best quality tire for a smooth ride.

I run 265/75/R16 Yokohama Geolander ATs. They are a slightly "road biased" AT tire. Work great as I am mostly on paved roads, and weekend trips onto dirt roads. No heavy duty offroading.

Went with Nitto Ridge Grappler 285/75/R17. Quiet on pavement and pretty darn good so far with the moderate off road trail that I've tested on.

Happy with these ATs for my mostly around-town use. Yokohama Geolander 265/75/16.

I have a 2002 4Runner SR5 4WD V-6 that I have Firestone Destination A/T tires on it and I have a 2006 4Runner Sport Edition V-8 4WD that has TOYO OPEN COUNTRY A/T tires on it.The TOYO's last longer as far as mileage goes.Both ride good.

Another vote for Falken Wildpeak AT3W (265/75/16). Super quiet, excellent off road, excellent in the snow (off/on road) and they are pretty cheap.

Hankook DynaPro's. Have done about 15k with them. I like them for the most part. Great tire for the money.

Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. 265/70R/16. 2nd set in 5 years (~12kmiles/year). Some road noise but handles NorthEast winters like its nothing.
As far as fuel economy issue, I have a lead foot so I can't guarantee their "negative" in that case but I didn't buy the 4Runner for its fuel efficiency.
