HELP! Sounds TURRIBL after timing belt & water pump
Hello T4R! I just replaced my timing and drive belts, water pump, and etc. I bought the kit with OEM parts and everything went very well. Initially, after refilling the radiator the water pump was leaking (I didn't start the car.) I pulled everything off and cleaned the block much better, reassembled everything, refilled the radiator and no leaks. I started the 4Runner and it sounded like SHIT. I was careful that the cam pulleys and crankshaft pulleys were lined up correctly, but one of them must have gotten off? IDK. Here's a video of what it sounded like. Any thoughts?

Check the timing marks.

Remove the timing cover and see where it's coming from, did you pull the pin from the tensioner? Sounds like belt slapping the cover.

Sounds like valves. Did you manually turn over the engine by hand before starting it?

That's what I was thinking too...tensioner not released...belt flappin or tensioner pulley flappin...it's tough on a short video but I listened to the 5 seconds of noise several times...I had my upper hose on wrong once and it hit the fan...made a noise kinda like that too...just knicked the hose.

Bought this 99 in 01 and haven't let it go since! Valve dropped at 195k so I rebuilt it with reman heads, new rings and one new piston...tough to find the correct numbered one but I did...still had the original hatch...I soaped it and did a light hatch to help the new rings seat...that was in 2015...since then I did a basic lift and put some VTX 18x9 inch wheels with 0 offset...Ive grounded the rear locker, ran a diff extension into the gas cap, did the hood piston mod...GM Alternator...13WL brakes..30 year ASE Master Tech with more tools than sense, so I quit everything and work at home now.

Non interference engine, not valves! Something is hitting somewhere. Look for it externally, but expect to take the timing covers off and find out what went wrong. Possible failed or unreleased tensioner, but the noise seems a little to rapid.

Thanks for the replies guys. The guy at the parts store also thought possibly something hitting the timing cover or valves. The tensioner pin was pulled, but I had to remove then reinstall the tensioner which meant I had to put it in a vice and put the pin back in. I would love for it to be something easy instead of a problem with the valves, but that's what it sounded like to me.

HELP! Sounds TURRIBL after timing belt & water pump
Ok, i know this sounds stupid but check your cam pulleys. I had a very very similar noise pop up about a week after my rebuild and it ended up being the alignment pin on the driver cam pulley slapping back and forth because i forgot to torque that one.
Figured it out with a stethoscope

I didn't replace the cam seals, so the pulleys were left untouched.

Ahh gotcha
Might still try a stethoscope to better isolate the noise

You can run the engine without the belts on and see if it goes away. Sounds like the fan is hitting something. Like a power steering or alternator bolt was left out a hair.
Timing is probably correct as the engine looks like it's running smooth. Even one tooth off will cause a shake. I'd suspect auxiliary pulley system. Take off one belt, run it. Repeat until all belts are off. If it continues, then it's in the timing area.
Good luck
