Suffering buyers remorse.. :/

Just drove a '99 Limited home yesterday and I'm a bit frustrated, just going to throw myself a little pity party here, sorry. First thing that comes to mind is holy hell, does these seats suck ass. I'm saying that after 17 years a t100 owner, these t4r seats are AWFUL. I don't know if the ONE owner has a whale of a wife (I'm 230, was 290 for awhile and my T seats were never this bad), but it was only about 20 minutes before I was in serious pain. Fooled by the recovered seats (and now, looking closer, that was done poorly).

I was also completely shocked by how TINY this thing is. I guess it's closer to the Tacoma in size than the T100. With the sunroof, that means my head is smashed solid against the headliner unless I get the "gansta lean" going on with full seat recline (which makes the pain from the seat that much worse). Were it not for my wife wanting this thing, I'd be tempted to just take the several thousand dollar hit and get this thing out of my life. I'm never going to be able to be in it for more than 10~15 minutes at a time as it sits (I'm an honest 6'4").

The rest is *****ing about prior owners, everyone goes through this. But who freaking doesn't replace lost keys? Wait, scratch that, who loses keys in the first place? I'm in my 5th decade and I'm struggling to remember even ONE instance where I "lost" a key. Had one, exactly one, stolen when it was in a jacket that was stolen. That T100, while just basic keys with an aftermarket alarm, I had 6 (six) keys and 3 remotes (one remote looked worse for wear). Do people just think "Hrm, I've lost 2 keys already, guess I'll just try real hard not to lose this last one"... the One key I have, was also chewed nearly to pieces by a dog. My brain simply can not fathom this scenario, no matter how I twist or turn it I'm always left lost.

To a lesser extent I feel the same way about the bent radio antenna (so it's non-functional), the missing pieces for the seat controls (plastic bits that fit on the electric controls), and non-functioning drivers lumbar control. I suspect the dash was replaced at some point as it looks Clearly different than the rest (airbag cover, glovebox, etc..) in terms of color... which I sort of understand since I'm going to guess the original was chewed up by a dog.

So, why did I buy the damn thing? One owner, low(ish) miles, I've found zero rust thus-far, current on all maintenance (20k on TB, water pump, tensioner, etc ~ 300 miles on new brakes, tires with good life, original transmission, etc...) and it's Easily the best example I've found in the past 3~4 months of looking. It's so far ahead of the rest that I didn't even get in/drive the others I've seen. Those were nearly universally walking up and saying "Yeah, sorry to waste both of our time but that's no where near the condition I'm looking to buy". Mostly I'm just disgusted that I sold my T100, which was in VASTLY better condition, for about the same as I bought this 4runner for. Don't ask me why I sold, I can't answer (seemed right at the time, found out I *HATE* new vehicles worse than I'm annoyed by this buy). There's nothing that can't be fixed... well, maybe the very tight interior space for my normal human size.

I know I'm picky, most people would probably be stoked to find a 4runner in the condition I found (oh, it stinks like wet dog too... 2 boxes of baking soda spread on the carpets currently). I brought this on myself, which is the worst part and where most of my anger stems from... I feel dumb for having bought this truck.

As a side note, WTF.... this thing can't even do 400 highway miles to a tank? I thought that was pretty normal for ALL vehicles to do, but it's seeming as thought the 320 till the light (and yes, I saw that the fuel gauge is inaccurate while waiting at the tag&title office) is actually on the better side of normal. This thing needs the 25 gallon tank from the T100.

(this is my intro post, I'm a picky bunghole)

Perhaps you should have actually gotten in one of the worse shape ones you walked away from, and taken them for a spin. It’s Tacoma small because well, it’s a Tacoma. Buyers remorse is usually based on financial expenditures, not emotional drama. Good luck with your pity party, I really have no sympathy.

You bought a 20 year old truck on an impulse, and expect it to be in 100% working order? A little bit of research beforehand would have really gone a long way for you.

This is seller’s remorse.

Good luck to your adventures in the future

While my inner-jerk wants to say, "Did someone have a gun to your temple saying 'you WILL buy this!' or I will shoot you!", the inner T4R owner says: "MODS! Bring em!"

Seats: Change em: BMW E90 3-series Seat Swap

Size: Well, can't do anything there really. Maybe the seat swap will lower the seating position for you.

Keys: Depending on what you have you should be able to find keys. We'll need more info on what is in your T4R.

Antenna: 86300-35090

Fuel: Auxiliary Fuel Tank

I'm 6'2" and it's comfortable for me. Do you have the cheaper cloth seats or the sport bucket seats? I have the sport seats in my 98 and they are beat out other seats from any other car I've owned:

That being said, they are not for anyone who is horizontally configured, if that makes sense. My wife and I are comfortable in them though.

My 4Runner also had dog stains on the front seat and grey hair packed into every single nook and cranny of the car. It does come out eventually. Also try these guys, they worked really well for the musty smell. They are like bug bombs so they fog up the whole car and eliminate almost all the smell (once you resolve the carpet issues):

If you're looking for sympathy here, you won't find it.

Did you not test drive it? And if you did, didn't you notice the small size, the smell, the missing keys, the missing interior pieces, the bent antenna, the uncomfortable seats and the mis-matched dash?

The only thing that you couldn't have expected is the small gas tank. It is annoying, no debate there...

I'm damn near 6'4 (280 lbs) and my head doesn't hit the roof. I drive about 2.5 hours up to my hunting land with it and I don't need to see a chiropractor when I get to the cabin. Is it as comfortable as my Camry or Highlander? Hell no. It's a 22 year old truck and it rides like one....

If you really hate it, sell it and move on.....

Good luck either way.

I'm giving a huge pass on this thread only because your name is Brian lol.

But all the things you are complaining about were not secrets in any way. And if you really want you can swap over a larger gas tank pretty easy.

Post some pics of your ride!!!

seat swaps aren't all that hard either.

either do the work to make it the vehicle you want it to be or sell it to someone who will.

How often do you get buyer remorse AND sellers remorse at the same time ?

What did you pay for it. I am sure you can sell it at the same price. The value of these trucks is pretty good right now. In my opinion you seem like a 4th Gen kind of guy.

Hey, I said this was mostly me being angry at myself. And yes, I did have a (figurative) gun to my head... my wife wanted this thing. Any of you married blokes will know that it's easier to just say Yes, and move on. I'm just venting, get this off my chest so I can move on.

I did do research, but several of these things I never even began to think about. One I assumed wrong (size, too many years in the T100 and forgot just how much smaller the Tacoma/4runner were), several were overlooked (antenna, dash difference) and the key thing didn't come up till after the title was signed because I never, EVER, could imagine a world in which someone only has 1 key that's mostly not-functional (the single most worn-out key I've ever seen).

I've been reading through the BMW seat swap, but one of the comments suggested that the seats sit higher so it needs more research. This is the most important Use thing that needs to be addressed. Keys and fobs are just a matter of money and time, nothing hard about it. Guess that's really true about everything else too.

I happen to have Both sellers and buyers remorse over my wifes main car too (sold a 2001 VW Jetta TDI/diesel for a 2018 Mazda3 hatchback, again owned the VW for 16 years and it was very much the Wrong decision just like selling the T100).

Only photos I have right now are from the seller:

It only came with one key?! And the antenna doesn't work?! Unacceptable. This thing is clearly causing you a lot of heartache and pain, so I'm going to do you a favor... I'll take it off your hands for $100 just to get it out of your life so you can move on and recover from the serious remorse you're facing.

I mean, I'll probably end up having it crushed, since it only has 1 key, and I don't know what I'm supposed to do with a vehicle with only 1 key. Can you even drive a vehicle if you only have 1 key?

In all seriousness, there might be something you can do about the seat height without switching seats. I'm not sure on the exact details, but on my old 3rd gen, the guy I bought it from was 6'7 and he shortened the seat bracket on the drivers seat and made it lower. I'm only 6'3 but I still noticed the difference and appreciated the extra headroom. No idea what exactly he did, but it's something for you to consider if it really bugs you (which it clearly does).

I would do this if my wife wasn't 5'1" lol. Pretty sure she wouldn't be able to look over the steering wheel.

Do it anyway and get her an inflatable seat cushion to sit on if she wants to drive it (assuming it's your runner and not hers). Worst case, she decides she doesn't want to drive it anymore, and you get it all to yourself now haha

Edit: Reasoning like this might be why I'm single though, so keep that in mind
