Nice to have you back in a 3rd gen! I was inspired by your DirtDuster build and got a 3rd gen as well!

Anyways, regarding the pro of the 8" front diff of the 4th gen.

I asked Front Range Offroad a couple years back about this article: This 1996 Toyota 4Runner Proves IFS Doesn’t Have to Be Weak

In this thread: Front Range Offroad Rock Surfer IFS skids for Toyota 4Runners!

I never followed up on that, but I wonder if it ever bore any fruit. If you miss the 8" front diff that much its worth looking into. Especially because it looks like that 3rd gen has something similar to the Marlin RCLT. This would make the 3rd gen pretty epic.

Thanks for the info Charlie. I just updated my post above with the new(er) Metal Tech long travel springs. They might be a decent option consider the free length, variable rate, and the relatively low spring rate. Either those or the Dobinsons 675V. Just need to persuade one of those companies to let me try a set, in the name of research!

Yah, I ran LS460's in my old 3rd Gen. I wasn't even running LS460R's so it was 1000000x harder to make them fit. I basically chopped off the entire rear half of the housing and built a vacuum table so I could build my own moulds to seal up around what I chopped off. I would never do it again, unless they were the "R" version.

Thanks for the links. I've followed that build (as much as possible) over the years and I too do not know where it sits today. I certainly love the concept of OEM CV's (factory length shafts) with an upgraded front diff and using a standard Bilstein 5100. Very much like the RCLT indeed with the high clearance arms too.

I've actually got a buddy with a 00' Tacoma who is collecting parts to swap in the 9" front diff, control arms, hub, spindle, out of a 5.7L Tundra onto the frame of his Tacoma. Basically 12" of OEM long travel and good for 37" + tires!

Been busy collecting parts for the build. Seems like I'm leaning more towards low maintenance and keeping this thing light and agile - for the short term anyway.

Pulled the beadlocks out of storage and after two years of wear the aluminum has started to fade. I bought some Meguire's aluminum polish and went to town. Still need to clean out all the beadlock bolt holes but pretty happy with the "polished" look on the lip. Once done, I applied a coat of wax to the whole setup just to help protect it once they get mounted up.

That would be awesome! I'm still trying to get to Calgary one of these years for a Flames game. Will definitely let you know if that materializes. I know it's still a decent clip away for you, but you never know if you may be in the area. Also let me know if you're ever in the Vancouver/Squamish area. It's not too bad of a drive from here and would always love the excuse to go and climb in Squamish.

I've been searching the last few days for compressed and extended lengths on the 6112 tundra bilstein's. Do you know either of those measurements by chance? Trying to decide whether to get tundra or 3rd gen 4Runner 6112's.

^^Looks like the Tundra 6112's are basically like an "extended travel" coilover in terms of length. I'll be running a SPC UCA to utilize the longer stroke with the Tundra 6112 and will be running limit straps. My only concern is the coil - 650lb unless you've got a bumper and winch might be a little heavy. I'm considering buying some 600lb springs from Wheelers to swap on. Can sell the 650lb Eibachs they come with or save them for down the road as the truck evolves.

Yah that would be great! I still head back to Calgary quite often, moreso than Vancouver TBH just because all my friends/family our in Alberta. Regardless lets stay in touch... hopefully the Flames can pull something out of their ass and comeback on Colorado this season (although at this stage Colorado looks REAL good). I've heard the climbing in Squamish is unreal.

While I wait for the new suspension and other parts to show up, I basically went to town shopping for maintenance parts. I had a slight valve cover leak and my timing belt is overdue. Lucky for me, I still get my parts discount at the Toyota Dealership I used to be a Parts Manager at, so it's an easy choice to go full OEM. Surprisingly though, I went Amazon Aisin Timing Belt kit as it was still cheaper than OEM with my discount.

Part 1 - The Teardown

I used a combination of the links above. I've got an O.G. FSM manual (wonder how I got that? lol) but the threads/video above did a good enough job explaining everything. Some slight differences in hose layout between motor years but nothing that you shouldn't be able to figure out if you're tackling this procedure on your own. Only thing I would recommend is that while you have the Intake Plenum off, now would also be a good time to change the spark plugs and wires. Super easy with everything out of the way.

The plan is to button everything up tomorrow night after work. You can certainly see the benefit of documented oil changes every 5,000kms... sure is clean under the valve covers!

We just purchased some vintage 1970's Canon FD prime lenses for our media company which we then sent away and had them converted to EF mounts with focus puller rings. Similar internals on these things to the modern day Canon Cine glass which is hella $$$$$$$$. Some camera small talk for anyone that cares ;) Loving the character of these lenses...

Thanks! I was debating another color scheme/powdercoat but happy how they turned out.


UPDATE

Got the valve cover gaskets back on. Replaced the plugs and wires while I was in there too. Got everything back together and the truck started right away. Only problem is that now I am having a high idle issue (about 1500 RPM). I've got a little play in the throttle body mechanism like in the thread below, and pulling on it seemed to lower the idle RPM so I tried the washer trick in the link.

Throttle Body Play - washer trick

This lowered my idle to about 1000 RPM. I used a little bit of WD-40 on the spring/TB mechanism without any luck. I also fully cleaned the Throttle Body when it was off for the Valve Cover Gasket job so I'm hoping I don't have to buy a new TB. The only other thing I can think of is that I gunked up the IAC valve when I was cleaning the TB. I definitely sprayed some carb cleaner down that little hole. I'll try spraying some more in there tomorrow and then doing the twist-and-soak method to see if it improves.

IAC Cleaning (Throttle Body Removal)

Will report back. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears!

Also check all your vacuum lines. Back when I did this job, I had forgotten to reconnect one vacuum line on the bottom of the TB area (or it had just wiggled itself off when I was taking the TB on/off), and it messed with me for weeks before I figured it out! lol

Good call. I honestly didn't know that line was there initially when I was taking everything apart. I pulled off the TB and coolant lines and didn't even notice that vacuum line. I did however see it when I was re-installing and I triple checked all my lines last night.

Hey Rob! You bet. It's cool to be back actually. Big part of it is this particular section of the 4Runner community - one of the few active use groups still out there. Glad to see you're still rocking Mean Green. Looks like your new garage setup is pretty dialed as well!

UPDATE:

Chasing down the high idle - SOLVED?

So last night I triple checked all my vacuum lines and all looked good. Actually found a small bracket on the driver's side that I forgot to attach to the lower intake plenum, so I'm glad I was in there snooping around.

I decided to pull the Throttle Body off the truck again and remove the IAC (didn't do this initially). I ordered a OEM gasket for it so I knew I would be setup in case the old one was toast. After getting it all apart it was fairly clean in there (no gunk buildup really) but I was just extra diligent this time about making sure everything went together perfectly and as clean as possible. Put everything back together and shimmed the TB mechanism out with a slightly larger washer than before (probably a hair smaller than 1/16" now).

Started the truck and it immediately idled at like 1500 RPM. Stumped, I went inside thinking I should do one more round of research and then think about buying a used TB to replace mine. I didn't really find any new information last night other than to re-adjust my throttle cable (I need to do this but I do not think it's the cause of my issue) and to try pulling the EFI fuse to force the computer to re-learn the idle. So this morning I pulled the EFI fuse and left it for 5 minutes. Drove to my brothers house a few blocks away and it was still idling high after warming up at around 1100 RPM. Let it idle while I waited for him to jump in the car with me (we carpool to work lots). Suddenly without any reason the idle dropped to 600 RPM. The engine was running perfectly smooth just with a lower idle, YES! After a couple more minutes it bumped up to about 900 RPM, and then a couple minutes later seemed to settle around 700 RPM. I then drove into town (30 kms) and the idle remained at the 700 ish mark. I will keep driving it and checking over the next couple of days but I am pretty sure the EFI fuse did the trick and this am the truck was bouncing around trying to re-learn the idle. Hope it stays happy and I can start modding this thing!

Is your A/C on? I know my 4th Gen idles ~200 rpm higher with the A/C on.

Wowie, yes! So stoked for the Duster II! This thread is like an OG reunion, so fantastic to see many of the old names I've read up on over the years and followed! Welcome back to the "3rd gen, best gen" section. No place like it.
