Super clean, almost dent free, only a door ding here and there gets 16mpg city and 18 hwy, currently sits at 253k miles and I daily drive it 25 miles 4 days a week to work. Burns zero oil.
Here is what I need advice about: I hate how underpowered it is when I have my family of 5 in it and it’s loaded with camping gear trying to get over the mountain pass! My foot is basically floored to keep up with traffic doing 55moh/60mph, Toyota geared these horribly. It’s fine when your at say 3500rpm but then it upshifts and you lose all your power.
3 options to vote on please
Sell it and buy a v8 4th gen and start build over (I have no money left over to upgrade it cause of how much I invested in this one)
I found a 75k 2000 4runner with magnason supercharger installed for sale that was wrecked that I could buy just not sure how cheap I could get it for or how much that is worth and swap everything low mileage over with supercharger.
V8 swap mine with tundra/sequioa after mine blows up but then everything would be high mileage.
I want to put 285/70/17 ridge grapplers in it, savage off-road hybrid bumper/sliders, rear tire swing out, prinsu roof rack in the future which is going to add weight and all that will cost like 5-6k so keep that in mind when voting on option. Plan to overland some day with 2-3 people.
My boy is 12 and in 4 years I’d like to have the rig be his depending on a lot of benchmarks he would have to maintain...
I’m already upside down in value but am at a cross roads, do I dump another 8k into it over next 4 years to make it last many years to come, or cut my loses and buy something with lower mileage and newer with a v8 in it.

I would vote for the supercharger and exhaust, this will be the easiest option.
I would also look at regearing to 4.88s, a lot of the power suck is the auto trans.
Good luck

My vote is keep and supercharge as well. Great looking rig, would love to learn more about your interior makeover.

Can anyone guess what my advice is?
You've put so much into the one you have, it would be a crying shame to let it all go. V8 swaps are few and far between, you'd have to do a lot of wiring and welding and may not play nice with your suspension setup due to clearances and the like. Supercharge it.

Putting larger\heavier tires on will make it slower. Regear and supercharge.
Also, your 4runner isn't high mileage.

I'm in a similar situation and my supercharger is on the bench about to go in on my truck with 226,000 miles.

I vote you keep it and make a freaking build thread so we can see all of your mods! I would love to see that interior makeover, including the RX8 seats.

Is the photobucket link not working? I need to order the photos as they are all over the place. Rx8 seats are very comfy, and the swap was easy. Just go to a junk yard and steal the factory seat floor brackets off some tore up ones and weld and grade 10 bolt them onto a piece of 1x2 steel tube attached to the Mazda seat brackets. The Mazda seat feet unbolt and then I just cut off the studs on the Mazda seat rails to make it mate with the 1x2 tube. Dimensionally they fit great in a 3rd gen. I am 6’ and have a couple inches of head room. If you are taller I would use flat bar and not a 1x2.

I just supercharged mine. I felt no power loss once I added the 33s
It feels great.
My next 4Runner will have a v8, only because of I have always had v6 and I am ready for more power when towing. But I am happy with this one right now
I say keep it supercharge or turbo

I need help
I don’t know that much about 4Runners. So I just made an account here. I was wondering if you could swap the engine from a 1997 forerunner that is rear wheel to 4Wheel drive 2001 4runner. I don’t know if it is worth my time to fix the 4 wheel drive 4Runner. But I need to fix it really bad because I need a way to get to College. Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

As long as it’s the 6 cyl. It’s the same engine and will swap over.

Would there be a difference in oil pan or transmission?

The 4wd transmission is different than the 2wd transmission. Not sure about oil pan but being a v6 I don’t know why it would be. It’s always smarter to do a like to like swap if you aren’t sure. Go to car-part.com and search for engine for your vehicle and see what comes up.
