A/c problems

I have a 96 limited. My A/C works most of the time but every once in a while it just stops. Any ideas what it might b?

Define 'just stops.' No blower, too? Or just stops blowing cold.

If the latter, first thing to do is look to see if the compressor is turning. Second, is check your refrigerant pressure.

Blowing hot air

Like theDurk said.

If it’s blowing air but it’s not cold, the compressor is likely not running. Look at the compressor clutch (center of pulley) and see if it’s spinning when the air is warm, it’s likely not.

If that’s the case take a volt meter or test light and check for power at the compressor wire, if you have power the clutch is bad, no power indicates the ECM is shutting the compressor off. This could be for a couple reasons.

Low Freon
Pressure switch
Etc.

Generally the first thing I would do is evacuate the system and put a vacuum on it to make sure there are no leaks. Then charge it to the proper levels and go from there.

Have you cleaned the AC condenser located in front of the radiator? If it is clogged, hot freon will be hot and the high side pressure switch finds high pressure and may shut off the compressor. If the Idle up does not work ECU can shut power to AC compressor too (it happened to my 92 corolla).

Also check the AC drive belt. Clean the gap between AC clutch and pulley with some compressed air.

It could also be the expansion valve sticking. If you have gauges hooked up when the A/C quits blowing cold, you'll see the low-side pressure go very low or into a vacuum.
