Failed NJ inspection today

Ok so I went to inspection today and failed for OBDII. I got some systems not ready and the tech asked if i had recent work done . She said I need to drive the car . Anyway , at the time i had no idea what she was talking about but the realized I worked on car last week and disconnected the battery and MAF sensor. I did not drive it until today . So I’m guessing the system didn’t get to go through cycle? Also , my gas was less than 1/4 tank. Should I just drive it for a week or go through that drive cycle? The other problem is My AC is not working at the moment . Compressor is shot. One of the problems was “AC unsupported “ does this mean i need to get this fixed before I go back? Here’s a rundown of what was wrong
Overall OBD - fail
Cat converters - not ready
Heated cat converter- unsupported
Evap - not ready
Secondary air inj-unsupported
Ac refrigerant -unsupported
O2 sensors - not ready
Egr-unsupported
Any info is appreciated

When you disconnect the battery it resets all the stats that the computer stores. It takes about 50-100 miles worth of driving to get a "Ready" reading that you can then use to pass/fail inspection. All the "unsupported" readings, I believe (someone correct if I'm wrong), just mean that the necessary circuitry is not present. These older vehicles didn't have these when they were built, so it's nothing to worry about.

Weekendclimber thank you . I’m a little relieved now. It’s not my daily but I still want her to pass. I figured the battery had something to do with it.

1) yes disconnecting the batter resets readiness monitors

2) getting them to clear is a pain in the ass. It only resets them on the first start of the day (coolant temp within 2deg of ambient) and there are all sorts of weird things like driving between 40 and 50 cyclically for 20 miles or some such nonsense. You can look them up and actively try to reset them, but depending on driving habits (like your first trip of the day always being short and the rest of them being warm starts) it can take a looooong time to clear.

If you're short on time to get it fixed best bet is to set aside a Saturday and go through the checklist of scenarios to reset them all.

Here are the specs for forcing the drive cycle. I don't know what part of NJ you are in, but around here it is IMPOSSIBLE to drive between 35 and 45 mph for 16 minutes without stopping. If you try it on the Interstate an 18-wheeler will run over you and on any other road you have to stop every few miles.

I strongly suggest you invest in a cheapo reader or, better yet, a Bluetooth adapter you can use with the Torque app on your phone. These will allow you to see your Readiness status.

BTW, NJ will allow you to pass with one not ready, as long as it is NOT Catalyst. For example, just EVAP, you can pass.

OK thanks guys. I’m from central Jersey so I know what traffic is all about. I’m just gonna drive it everyday. The woman put a “9” on windshield but I have no idea what it means . Also I have a Bluetooth scanner already . I’m gonna download an app and give it a shot.

It means she's inviting you to add a 6 to it

Actually, was your inspection due back in September perhaps? Maybe they ran out of the red rejected stickers of shame
